Vittorio Gassman was born on September 1, 1922 in Genoa, Italy. Gassman’s career began in the theater in 1943. Since then, with the same skill and ease he managed and tragic theatrical roles - Othello, Iago, Hamlet, and comic and characteristic roles in cinema. Gassman starred with Dino Risi, Ettore Scola, Roberto Rossellini and other prominent directors. For his extraordinary gift of reincarnation and acting skills, his colleagues called him “Mattatore”, which can be translated as “the main character”.
