Playwright-comediographer, director and actor of theater and cinema, Eduardo De Filippo was born on May 24, 1900 in Naples (Italy), in a family of actors. His real name is Passarelli, and the pseudonym "De Filippo" appeared in 1929, when he, along with his brother Peppino and sister Titina, created his first troupe "Humoristic Theatre". He made his stage debut at the age of 11. Eduardo De Filippo began his literary career in 1926. His first success came in 1931, after the production of the comedy “Christmas in the House of Signor Cupiello”. He made his film debut as an actor in 1932, and as a director in 1939, putting the film “A Star Falls in the Fields”. The flourishing of the playwright, who experienced the influence of R. Viviani, R. Scarpetta, L. Pirandello, comes after the fall of the fascist dictatorship in 1945. His best comedies are, in fact, family dramas combining the melodramatic and dramatic: Naples is a millionaire, Filumena Marturano, Ghosts, Lies on Long Legs, De Pretore Vincenzo, Mayor of the Sanita District. In addition to theatrical productions of these plays, he brought several of them to the screen, including Naples - the city of millionaires (1950), Philumena Marturano (1951), Ghosts (1954). De Filippo’s plays formed the basis of Dino Risi’s films Ghosts (1968), Vittorio De Sici’s Marriage in Italian (1964). In the last picture, Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni brilliantly played. De Filippo created the most notable acting works (except for the author's film adaptations) in the films "Girls from Piazza España", "Gold of Naples", All to Home". In the last years of his life, the playwright organized a school of young playwrights in Florence, in 1981 - a drama studio in Rome. Eduardo De Filippo died on November 1, 1984 in Rome.
