The childhood of the future symbol of Italian cinema was difficult. Abandoned by her parents as a child, first by her father and then by her mother, Anna was raised by her mother’s parents. She spent her childhood in the poor neighborhoods of Rome. However, her grandparents were able to give her a decent education, and she even attended drama school. Soon she moves to San Remo and performs in night cafes and variety shows. It draws the attention of the well-known, even then, film director Goffredo Alessandrini, the future husband of Anna Magnani, who saw in her Italian Edith Piaf.
Anna Magnani begins her acting activity on the stage of the theater stage and only in 1938 she played her first major role in the film directed by Mario Soldatti “Princess Tarakanova”. And a serious role in the film, which began to speak film critics, was the work of Anna Magnani in the film of the young Italian director Vittorio de Sica “Torese Friday” (1941).
Rapid fame and worldwide recognition brought Anna Magnani work with director Roberto Russellini. The film is called Rome, the Open City (1945). Then there was a collaboration with the famous actor Federico Fellini in “Love” (1948). All world film critics noted the explosive temperament of the actress, with which she accompanied the performance of the roles of even ordinary Italian women. For the main role in the film L. Jumpa “Deputy Angelina” (1947), she was awarded the “First Prize of the Venice Film Festival”.
After a creative break with R. Russellini, Anna Magnani successfully starred in the films “The Most Beautiful” (Dir. Visconti, 1951) and “The Golden Coach” (Direct J. Renoir, 1953). The decline of Italian neorealism did not leave the famous actress without creative work. She receives numerous invitations from overseas Hollywood. Especially for her playwright T. Williams writes the play “Tattooed Rose”, for the film adaptation of which Anna Magnani was awarded the Oscar in 1955.
The last years of life A. Magnani was seriously ill and died on September 26, 1973 from pancreatic cancer. She is buried in the ancestral crypt of director R. Rosellini, with whom she reconciled shortly before her death. /
