One of the most famous Mexican directors, Arturo Ripstein was born on December 13, 1943 in Mexico City, Mexico. One of the most famous Mexican directors, Arturo Ripstein was born on December 13, 1943 in Mexico City, Mexico. His father was the famous film producer Alfredo Ripstein Jr., so it is not surprising that Arturo also tied his fate with cinema. He began his career as an assistant to the great Luis Buñuel when he filmed his films Nazarin and Fighter Angel in Mexico. Arturo Ripstein's first independent production was the western "Tiempo De Morir" - he staged it at the age of 22, and the script for the film was written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Later, the director worked with many Latin American writers, and one of his last films he directed was based on Marquez’s novel Nobody Writes to the Colonel. The most successful for Ripstein was the collaboration with the screenwriter Pas Alicia Garciadiego.
For several decades Arturo Ripstein has produced more than two dozen paintings, of which the most famous in the world were “Queen of the Night”, “Beginning and End”, “Bloody-Red”, “Kingdom of Fortune”, “Woman from the Port”. His films have repeatedly participated in competitive screenings at various prestigious film festivals, including San Sebastian, Venice and Cannes, not to mention national ones – so, the director was awarded the highest national award “Golden Ariel” five times. In addition, Arturo Ripstein was the founder of the first film school in Latin America - "Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos" (CUEC).
