The most important role of Bruce is also associated with England: he played Dr. Watson in several films based on the books of Conan Doyle.
Nigel Bruce was born on 4 February 1895 in the family of Sir William Waller Bruce and his wife Angelica, daughter of George Selby, General of the Royal Artillery. The father of the future actor died in 1912, his mother in 1917. Nigel received his education in worthy educational institutions in Britain - Grange, Stevenge, and at the Abingdon School. When the First World War broke out, Bruce went to the front with the rank of lieutenant, and in France he was seriously wounded - eleven bullets hit his left leg. Bruce was immobilized for a long time - he spent most of the war in a wheelchair, but still managed to overcome his illness and go on stage.
Nigel Bruce made his debut at the Comedy Theatre on May 12, 1920, before traveling to Canada. Cinema became his creative playground eight years later, and moving to Hollywood in 1934 was a logical move.
Bruce's filmography includes about eighty films, among them - paintings by Alfred Hitchcock.
Rebekah and "Suspicion." In the film “Son of Lassie” Nigel played the grandfather of the heroine young Elizabeth Taylor.
And yet, the main thing that Nigel Bruce did and became famous for is his Dr. Watson. He interpreted the image of the friend and assistant of the famous Sherlock Holmes quite comically, which is not always liked by fans of detectives Conan-Doyle, but still this work of Bruce was a masterful reincarnation.
Actor Basil Rathbone, who played Sherlock Holmes himself, as well as his colleague, did not accept American citizenship and forever remained one of the best actors in England. /
