The real name of this actor is Richmond Reed Carradine, and at one time he was considered one of the most prominent character actors, although he began his career as a portrait painter and sculptor. In 1925, he first entered the theater in New Orleans. Then hitchhiked to Hollywood, but hit the big screen only in 1930. He had the pseudonym John Peter Richmond. When he signed with Fox five years later, he changed his name again and has since become known as John Carradine.
The heyday of his film activity came in the 30s, he played almost every characteristic role that he was not offered, from Nazis to professors, although he often got the role of mad scientists. He even played Dracula three times. Between filming, he continued to perform in theater, mostly in Shakespeare's plays.
In Hollywood, he had a reputation for being eccentric and somewhat violent, as well as being nicknamed the Bard of Boulevard for his habit of reciting pieces of Sheskpier in a loud voice while walking.
