Hartley began his film career with short films. The first full-length film was called The Incredible Truth. In 1988, at the festival in Toronto, this picture was noticed and appreciated by critics. Amazing was the fact that the film was shot by the director in just 11 days and subsequently paid for itself in seven times the size. The second film “Trust” Hall shot in three weeks, and again the unusual style of the director caught the attention of the audience.
