In 1943, when the Nemirovich-Danchenko School-Studio was opened, the first students were called lucky. They went on stage with Kachalov Knipper-Chekhova Moskvin Tarkhanov Shevchenko Toporkov and after graduation, almost all were admitted to the Moscow Art Theatre. At that time, you could only dream about it. It was the first episode. On the course, one of the most talented was considered Valentina Kalinina.
In 1955, she starred in the lead role in the film by Julia Raisman “Life Lesson” and immediately became known throughout the country.
Everything went well in the MHAT. Shortly after coming to the theater Kalinina played Florence in Stanitsyn's play "Dombie and Son". It was a brilliant work of the actress. Then - in the play Lilian Hellman "Autumn Garden" partners were Androvskaya Stepanova Korov Popova Massalsky. They had noisy success. Kalinina played a young Sophie young in the play there were only two: she and Konstantin. Gradopolov and the charm of the chamber performance acted on the auditorium.
But Kalinin's generation wasn't very lucky. They came to the Moscow Art Theatre during the Cold War, the rampant cosmopolitanism. The Moscow Art Theatre staged bad plays: Asanov’s “Diamonds” “Days and Nights” Simonov’s “Green Street” Surov – all this clearly compromised the famous theater. Since the beginning of May 1955, the theater had no chief director and the Moscow Art Theatre needed a firm and principled leader. The usual symmetry of intratheatrical life was destroyed. From the atmosphere of the MHAT was leaving significance. Personal contacts between the theater and playwrights were blurred. Russian classics have disappeared from the repertoire. For the first eight years of work in the Moscow Art Theatre, Kalinina had only two roles, they testified to the great lyrical talent of the actress.
After the failure with the Gorky "Davniks" there was a staging of Turgenev's novel "Noble Nest" Kalinina played Lisa Kalitina play put Yanshin. Unfortunately, the fame of the theater performance did not add but Kalinina and in this role was elegantly refined can only be overly nervous.
Working with Yanshin, she simultaneously rehearsed with Kedrov. Today, his name is known only to connoisseurs of the history of the Moscow Art Theatre and in fact he was for nine years after the death of Khmelev artistic director of the theater.
He took Kalinin in Shakespeare's "Winter's Tale." Work on Shakespeare lasted 35 months and required 673 rehearsals. The desire to restore your creative prestige to take revenge for previous defeats has led to this endless rehearsal process. In "Winter's Tale" Kalinina played Loss. She did everything she could, but the show didn’t work either. During the nine years of leadership of the famous collective, Kedrov had one great performance - "Fruits of Enlightenment" equal to another outstanding phenomenon on the stage of the Moscow Art Theater before Kedrov took the artistic direction "Deep Intelligence" on the play of Crohn all the rest were defeats. Naturally, this affected the actors involved in his performances.
The spring of the late 50s also changed theatrical life. The worldview changed, a different meaning began to be invested in the word “modern”.
The Moscow Art Theatre at this time produced a "Doll's House" put Ivan Tarkhanov. Nora played Valentina Kalinina. The performance was not exciting. The role was a lot of subtle shades, but it did not save the situation.
When Varpakhovsky in 1968 put “Days of the Turbins” in the Moscow Art Theatre, it is natural that he entrusted the role of Elena to Kalinina she had a reputation as the most talented heroine of the young Moscow Art Art Theatre of the pre-Dephremian period. The Turbin Days was another theater failure.
The old people are seriously thinking - what to do? It was decided to invite Efremov and, as is known, in 1970 Oleg Efremov headed the Moscow Art Theatre.
In the first season, he began to dramatically rebuild the life of the theater, the repertoire changed in the troupe, new actors came to the troupe, a new ability to light up the hall with civic passion and the depth of penetration into the “life of the human spirit.” There were hopes that the MHAT would again become the "master of the doom." A lot of water has leaked since then. Theatre has long since lost its magical power.
Valentina Kalinina was anxiously waiting for the arrival of Oleg Efremov intuitively realizing that she is unlikely to become "his actress." Her life took place in the Moscow Art Theater in the years of failures and the crisis of the theater when victories were counted in units, but the Mkhatov air was still miraculously held. Still alive were the "old men" she especially appreciated Yanshin she could not forget his participation in the play "Autumn Garden" with Vera Nikolaevna Popova. Now the "new times" were coming.
Efremov began his directorial path in the Moscow Art Theatre with the plays “Dulsineya Tobosskaya” by A. Volodin and “The Last” by Gorky. The performances were controversial. Kalinina played Sophia in "The Last" her Sophia was merged with the manners of the beginning of the century. Someone interfered with "breaking" "stylization" but behind all this stood a living man, a subtle vibrating and deeply unhappy. The role was played very strongly but Kalinina played only in the second part of the first performer was G. Kalinovskaya although everyone understood that to compare these actresses on talent is not necessary. Over the years, she became painfully nervous.
Her last work in the Moscow Art Theatre was the role of the Daughter in Albee’s play “It’s Over” in the production of the actress “Contemporary” L. Tolmacheva. For the first time the play was shown to the public on December 30, 1979, but unfortunately it was played for a short time 52 times and he ended his life - Maria Ivanovna Babanova was sick. The great actress appreciated Kalinina she liked how she “bit” the mistress (she was wonderfully played by Stepanova) as she conducted a dialogue with her. The daughter caused her to feel tired she was not satisfied with her and made her feel it. The actresses conducted a duel with an artistic feeling finding their own emotional echo of what had to play on stage and, despite the different manners of playing, their dramatic spirituality gave the performance a special weight. Kalinina Not everyone liked in this role. Ephraim did not accept her; she was irritated by her exuberance. But recently this long-standing performance was shown on television - and even for those who did not belong to the number of fans of Kalinina, it became obvious how deeply and subtly she played.
Ahead was the division of the Moscow Art Theatre, but even before this event Efremov carried out the necessary reduction of the troupe. Each actor was discussed at the art council and then voted. It all depends on the occasion, as often happens in the theater. Kalinina lacked one voice and was forced to leave the theater. She had to live another ten years, it is possible that more things will turn out differently. She could play and play. . .
Her husband died and she was left alone. She could not accept that she was outside the MHAT. She never came to the theater and was in fact infinitely unhappy and lonely. Retirement was difficult and poor and died alone in an empty apartment. Her body was found a few days after her death. Then there was the funeral of the actress crying over the coffin blaming themselves for being inattentive to her. But everything was already over, as in the play in which she played on the stage once her native MHAT.
