He studied the art of an animator at the courses at the film studio "Soyuzmultfilm", received a diploma of the art department of the printing institute. And then his whole life is connected with the studio “Soyuzmultfilm”, where he worked for 10 years as an animated artist, and then as a director, director and animator of his films. Anatoly Petrov as an animator has created more than fifty films. He was the initiator and one of the authors of popular children's film magazines "The Jolly Link" and "The Merry Carousel". There are many innovative techniques on his account. He owns the idea of light-cutting design of celluloid (“photography”). It is this technology that has been used in filming.
"Groundground" “Mother Will Forgive Me,” “Hercules at Admet’s.” Anatoly Petrov owned a very rare and complex style of animation in three-dimensional space (in the pre-computer era). This style was especially vividly demonstrated in the animated film “The Ground” (based on the script of the science fiction writer Sever Hansovsky).
His films were known and loved not only by Soviet children. In 1977, at the 7th International Short Film Festival in the Finnish city of Tampere, the animated film “And Mom Will Forgive Me” was shown and awarded the prize. And at the film festival of the same level in Varna, the award was awarded to the plot “Firefly” from the film magazine “Merry Carousel”.
Anatoly Petrov led the association "Tradition" at the studio "Soyuzmultfilm", was a member of the Association of Animators.

In the last years of his life, Anatoly Alekseevich wrote and simultaneously illustrated three volumes of a textbook on cartoons.
