He studied at the law department of the University of Rome, staged performances on the university stage. In the cinema from 1948 until 1954, he shot fifteen acclaimed short films. Intending to film Vasco Pratolini’s novel “Family Chronicle” as a feature film debut, however, he shot the lyrical comedy “Girls from San Frediano” (1954) on his own novel. The reputation of a skilled master of film narration and psychological portraits of characters was successfully confirmed in Stormy Summer (1959) and The Girl with a Suitcase (1961). Having achieved the film adaptation of The Family Chronicle (1962), he creates in his own way a unique work, an experience of cinema tragedy on local, “family” material, in which the traditions of neorealism are organically combined with the modernity and problems of the new Italian cinema (the film was awarded the main prize of the IFF in Venice). In 1965, based on the novel of the same name, Hugo Pirro filmed the anti-war drama “Soldier Girls” / “They followed the soldiers” (1965 together with France and Yugoslavia).
On the material of the anticolonial liberation movement in Africa, he puts the religious and philosophical parable “Sitting at the Right Hand” (1968), the general humanistic content of which initially prevails over the socio-political. Distancing himself from political cinema, he shot the melodrama The First Night of Peace (1972, together with France), in which Alain Delon played one of his best roles. According to the novel of the same name, Dino Buzzati shoots the film “Tatar Desert” (1976, together with France and Germany), one of the most significant works of Italian historical cinema, which replaced political cinema, about the vanity and dramatic consequences of militaristic psychosis.
