But at the age of 16, the young man suffered a serious back injury and was forced to leave his sports career. After graduation, the boy wanted to continue his studies in Cambridge, but he entered the University of East Anglia in Norwich, where he began to study acting.
Smith’s career began with roles in productions of Murder in the Cathedral and The Master and Margarita at the National Youth Theatre. The role in the last performance gave the young man the opportunity to hire his agent and get the first professional roles in performances such as “On the shore of the vast world” and “New murders”. Matt was constantly short of time, so he signed a contract with the university and finished the last two courses externally.
Smith's first major television role was in the drama television series Party Animals. This series is about the life of political consultants of the British Parliament. Smith played Danny Foster, a research specialist at the home office under Deputy Minister and Labour MP Joe Porter. The series consists of eight episodes, which aired from January to March 2007.
