John Barrowman was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 11 March 1967. When the child was 9 years old, the family moved to Illinois, USA, so the boy grew up and studied in America.

After appearing in a production of Sam Mendes' musical The Fix in 1998, he was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award. The last theatrical production in the West End was the play "Cages for weirdos." After that, John Barrowman began to participate in various projects of the BBC.
