Leonid Gaidai always had awe for certain actors, with whom he had a great working relationship. He often invited such actors to his projects and often gave well-known roles to them and the public. Take the same Shurik performed by Alexander Demyanenko, who became one of the symbols of Gaidai’s career. But most of all, the audience loved the trio of Coward, Stupid and Experienced, cunning and a little unsuccessful scammers who constantly get into new problems. And one of the most interesting appearances on the screen was the short film “Dog Barbos and an extraordinary cross”.
Once tired of constant scams and problems, Coward, Stupid and Experienced went to the river to relax and catch fish. Of course, there is no way to do without the use of alcohol, which has always attracted our guys, but this time they are more important than that, namely the fishing itself. But only by legal methods, they are not used to working, and therefore decided to cheat and use TNT. Like fish supervision sailed to a completely different place, and therefore you can do your “black” business.
However, as soon as the Experienced throws a checker with a stick into the river, then the dog immediately rushed after it, the same ball from the “Trackers”. And she decided that it was all the game and the stick just needed to be returned to the hosts. This is very scary because an explosion could happen very soon. And therefore for Coward, Stupid and Experienced begins another extraordinary cross. But this time not through the snowy forest, but through the green glades. But there is no doubt that the guys simply will not, because their physical form is far from ideal, and the ball runs well even very quickly.
Of course, most of the charm of this short film rests on the main actors - Vitsina, Nikulina and Morgunov. They already know their characters and their characters well, and therefore enjoy being played. In the frame, they look completely relaxed and authentic and it will not work at all to single out one person to a special extent, because they complement each other perfectly as a whole.
Well, when the most extraordinary cross begins, it is definitely worth seeing, because everything is filmed dynamically and extremely resourceful. Heroes constantly get into trouble, fall, catch up with each other, then slow down. In just a couple of minutes of screen time, Gaidai showed us a huge and funny story that uniquely uplifts the mood and carries a moral.
“Dog Barbos and Extraordinary Cross” is another excellent work by Leonid Gaidai and his invariable three scammers. This short film is very dynamic and fun, and how many times do not watch it, but always fun and positive on the soul.

The language of the comedy about the first bell of the environmental crisis
Gaidai quite a long time came to his senses after his debut solo film - "Groom from the other world" - cut censors. Not wanting to risk his reputation again, the director takes up short films, and in 1961 releases a ten-minute story about the dog Barbos, where the legendary trinity of hooligans appears for the first time - Coward, Stupid and Experienced performed by Vitsin, Nikulina and Morgunov, respectively. And this little work has not gone unnoticed.
Sixty years later, Dog Barbos is still relevant. Either Gaidai was so apt to notice the trends of society, or our current problems were already a sore topic. In 1961, only nine years later, ecologists will begin to sound the alarm, seeing pollution and biodiversity decline, and Gaidai already then devoted a miniature plot to how a faithful dog becomes an involuntary retribution to hooligans who litter in nature and indulge in dynamite. Replace the latter with a firecracker - and voila, the picture of today! Like sixty years ago, many Russians now love fishing, and like sixty years ago, there are those who behave ... no, not like a pig, because pigs, contrary to stereotypes, do not shit where they relax ... behave simply not well, throwing bottles into the grass and not thinking about the damage to water bodies. And also young trees that are cut down for firewood.
For one reason or another, Gaidai almost completely abandoned the lines in this tape. Coward, Stupid and Experienced look at each other, smile, laugh, stare at their eyes in fear, and this behavior reveals the characters and the situation better than any words. This is largely due to the funny and positive music written by the composer Nikita Bogoslovsky, also known for the soundtracks to numerous Soviet cartoons.
These ten minutes, which became a breath of joy for both Gaidai and the audience, are not boring. Revisiting them, as well as subsequent directorial work, is a pleasure!

Three friends went fishing, took the dog Barbosa with them. Fishing on a fishing rod, uh, it's too tedious. Dynamite will be a lot more fun. Having thrown a little on the chest, our fishermen tie dynamite to a stick and throw it into the water. But who would have thought that Barbos would want to return the stick to his masters?
Legend from Master Gaidai. The short film came out in 1961. Yes, he already had the comedy “Groom from the other world”, but it was after “Barbos”, the director felt his unique style – bright characters, ringing music and hilarious sounds. By the way, working with sounds (said something about it), turned Gaidai into a popular favorite. Any other director would just jump over a tree. Gaidai's sound is "F-F-F-F-F"! And that's really cool.
Gaidai worked in the comedy genre most of his life. He wanted to be funny, he wanted to be happy, and he did it. "Dog Barbos" confirms my words. In fact, we have a silent movie, because Coward, Stupid and Experienced do not talk at all. Gaidai loved old comedians (Charlie Chaplin, for example). Don’t be surprised, the “woe-fishing” half of the movie will be worn out. This is not just running, this is respect and a low bow to the “great mute.”
About feuilleton (and Gaidai shot feuilleton, I remind you). I agree that it is aimed at something specific. Gaidai has poaching. Poaching is not very relevant now, of course. But you must understand that the topic may become outdated, even humor may become outdated, but if you do it with your soul, your movie will live forever. And with the soul of "Dog Barbos" at all no problems. Gaidai loves his heroes, it is noticeable in every frame.
An example, Nikulin sits and is like this - "Bang!", in his hands is already kefirchik. None of you thought about where he came from. No, seriously, from where? You've all taken Stupid Bacchanalia for granted. Why? Yeah, yeah, that's the power of the director. This is love. This is the magic of cinema. Great movie (albeit simple)! If someone begins to grumble about decrepit old age, do not talk to this person, do not waste time.
Better watch, review, laugh and have fun.
P.S.
For actors – eternal memory, a great trinity, not even discussed! And Barbos should be ashamed. A relative of Kujo is probably ahahaha.

Being one of the first directorial works Leonid Gaidai, a small short feuilleton about three unlucky "fishermen" and, concurrently, drink lovers, gave way to a big movie, already symbolic for the Soviet space and Russian comedy cinema in general, the trinity - Coward, Balbes and Bypass.
Linear and simple plot, exposing some acute social themes (poaching, in this case), has an excellent quality for the early 60s, stunning and colorful actors (Vicin, Nikulin and Morgunov, respectively) and a completely "gray" content. The mediocrity, in this case, lies not in the details, which at moments were incredibly comical (a bottle of milk in Nikulin’s hands or improvised fishing rods), but lies on the surface. This is in the absolute straightforwardness of the narrative, without the use of artistic turns that would benefit the picture.
Not belittling the opinion that Gaidai is a great director, and the famous trio is insanely charismatic and memorable, the “soil” is not quite ready.
Here it is worth recalling the debut short film "Children's Car Racing", where the first appearance of Tramp Charlie was also very, very "ghost" in nature. Drawing parallels, it remains to be hoped that a faded start is only a preparation for the public to fully immerse themselves in real comedy and art.

Time heals, angles smooth out, and only the best remains in memory. It is difficult, almost impossible to believe it to this day, but the incomparable Gaidaev trio was friendly only on the screen. And in life, the experienced, the Stupid and the Coward... no, they did not feud, of course, but they were completely different people. Cunning, benevolent and hermit - can they have much in common? Especially if one candidate is forced from above. Gaidai himself made a significant contribution to the relations of the brilliant company, openly welcoming Nikulin and coolly treating Morgunov and Vicin. It is a real miracle that when they came together, the actors forgot about differences and arranged such fun that it did not depend either on the era or on individual viewers’ ideas about perfect humor. Charming crooks did not need words when there were enough individual cadres. Here we see smiling men throwing a stick to a faithful dog in the belief that he will deftly catch her and rush back with an arrow. But hapless poachers skillfully portray ordinary fishermen, baring their heads in front of the inspector’s boat. Really, why do they need words? With one gesture, great artists can say everything they need. When, for short-sightedness, they have to give a dragonfly from their own dog, the origins of the phenomenon called “Gaidaev comedy” become visible.
Oleynik’s ostrosatirical feuilleton, which formed the basis of “Unusual Cross”, threw the director not just a theme for film adaptation, but formed a direction that has been successfully exploited for several decades. Leonid Iovich was not without condescension to what he filmed, although he understood the uniqueness of the emerging phenomenon of antiheroism. Subsequently, Gaidai will like to lead this undeclared confrontation of Coward, Balbes, and Bevaliy against the elite and noble Soviet society. In the actions of the reckless trinity, a natural craving for improvisation was guessed, acquiring bravura-caricature forms. No matter how hard you try, you can not perceive these crooks as a real threat - if only to yourself. Gaidai just wanted, even with their debut short film, to convince the viewer of the naturalness of all that is happening, having a fair outcome. Features of the comedy genre, which the director did not allow to destroy censorship in “Groom from the other world”, made Gaidayev’s satire soft, Soviet-naive and Russian-friendly. Do not forget for a minute that drowning fish is bad, and being a poacher is questionable valor. And at the same time, it is difficult to get rid of the feeling that there should be exceptions in any rule, the laughter with which the three go to trample the law is too infectious.
Nikulin, Vitsin, and Morgunov were as united as they were able to show the individual characteristics of their heroes. This means that the first will always be overcome by carefree fun, the second at the first urge will want to faint, and the third will not let you forget who is in charge here. However, no matter how unpleasant it was to poachers, and the source of the comedic bedlam is still the dog Barbos - an ordinary mongrel, whose vigilance would be envied by any law enforcement officer. Gaidai at the time of filming was too reluctant to give the domestic police a decisive role, and who would be laughing, frankly speaking? A man’s best friend, a man’s best friend, is a man’s best friend. In the unquenchable charm of the years lies the secret of all classical Gaidayev comedies, and “Extraordinary Cross” became in every sense the initiator. The adventures of the best trinity in the history of Soviet cinema began with an unsuccessful fishing trip, and will end only in the memory of each of us. Now that the last of our heroes is fifteen years old, there is no doubt about it.
"Dog Barbos and the Unusual Cross." It was this short comedy that brought fame to Leonid Iovich Gaidai. It shows three crooks, which later everyone recognizes as "Coward - Stupid - Experienced". Probably, all these are components of success; and just, perhaps, the glory would have come to Gaidai not to such a dense extent, maybe we would not have recognized the now recognized master if he had not had George Vycin , Yuri Nikulin and Evgeny Morgunov - those very playful poachers from this feuilleton.
So, a gang of friends and their dog are in a great mood. Beautiful weather. Just for fishing. But the heroes have their own fishing methods. They frighten the fish in the river, playing water to an old fisherman, in which the viewer easily recognizes Leonid Gaidai. And get the dynamite...
But before proceeding to the moment when the dog chases with a dynamite checker with a lit Bickford cord behind the legendary trinity, I want to note one fact! Dog Barbos (or Brech, as his real name) why did he run? He was forced to bring a stick all the way to the river. And the dynamite was tied to the stick! Well, this is information for especially picky viewers.
And in order not to talk about the fact that it is so easy to carry an explosive substance with you with impunity, these bad guys took care of the efforts of Gaidai and Co about camouflage: they deliberately carried fishing rods - and not in vain! For a couple of moments we show the Soviet Rybnadzor.
But then the plot turns to running. In this part (the first of the two) Coward, Stupid and Experienced run from dogs. We all know that the polarity will change. In the meantime, the cord burns, Barbos runs. And our trio-banditos run away from the dog and explosives.
What's left to say? This is a silent movie, the only words of which will be the endgame performed by a dog. Well, Barbos will say goodbye to us in human language, being in a screensaver frame. The value of this tape will not be overestimated even if desired. Probably, this is the magic of Gaidai himself - to fall in love with himself and his creations of the audience.
For now. Leonid Gaidai gives us 14 minutes of happiness, showing a small and remote tape Dog Barbos and an unusual cross

"Dog Barbos and the Unusual Cross" is the first of two great feuilletons, shown in the style of silent cinema. Shown, in fact, a marathon, where the trio, the most famous of which is not in Soviet cinema, run away from the dog with dynamites in the mouth.
In general, Coward, Stupid and Experienced were going fishing. But in a poaching way. What they decided to fish with dynamite is exactly what these guys will do. After all, the dog Barbos very soon will run after his masters with a lit wick and explosives in his teeth.
Golden trio of domestic cinema all 14 minutes (so much is this film in size) will run away from his pet, because he rushes, because he is used to bringing a stick.
Vitsin, Nikulin and Morgunov again (and chronologically so for the first time) please viewers of many generations with their sparkling desire to live the role.
And, of course, what will come out of this race - you just need to see!
It's the greatest movie ever! From the words here only sounds the final speech of the dog Barbosa, which is already in a plaque a la “Metro Golden Mayer”. But how much joy and laughter has already brought this wonderful short film!

The film is valuable, first of all, as the first appearance of Georgy Vitsin, Evgeny Morgunov and Yuri Nikulin in their cult images for Soviet cinema. Later, these characters will appear in many cameos in much more famous and popular films, but it was here that their trio first came together.
Separately, this short film can be considered as part of the advertising campaign of the USSR against alcoholism and hooliganism. In that capacity, she was undoubtedly successful. The image of each of the characters and the problems of their behavior are revealed visually and with humor.
However, if we consider these ten screen minutes simply as a self-contained work, then there is nothing really remarkable about it. It's not a bad idea, but nothing brilliant or brilliant. Realization is average, because the run is too long and realism is noticeably lame.

Now the attacks will begin on the fact that the comedy box-fuilleton film "Dog Barbos and an unusual cross" is a recognized Soviet masterpiece, a classic, a magnificent film ... Yes, the film is not bad, but it did not catch me. In general.
It doesn’t matter to me whether they talk in this movie or not (in this case, they don’t). The music is excellent, but the very fact of this stupid running, you can say, finished me closer to the final. Was I funny? Nope. Interesting? Not either. Here you can admire only the magnificent trinity, which will not leave anyone indifferent, that is, immortal Nikulin, Morgunov and Vitsina.
Compared to other works in which this trinity operates, Barbos in Soviet cinema, in my opinion, did not bring anything new. Of course, with “Barbos” and began the entire adventure of the trio in other films, but now, if they name any films with their participation, “Dog Barbos” will clearly pass the box office.
It would be interesting to read the book.
Even after more than half a century, this short comedy film has the amazing property of gathering people at the screen, especially in the family circle. Even the title itself, as a business card of history, sets in absentia a positive mood, especially if for some incredible reason, you are not yet familiar with this cult comedy sketch.
A very rare case, especially for Soviet cinema, when three conditionally negative characters for many years retain the status of people's favorites and give their appearance in the cara good mood. Obviously, all the humorous effect rests on the comedic talent of the three performers. Even with such a modest duration of production, Coward, Stupid and Experienced, each in their own way, manage to be remembered as expressive images. Although the topic of poaching then and now remains outlawed, the peculiar adventures of the heroes in the fresh air are watched with interest. What is a magnificent scene with improvised fishing rods at the sight of law enforcement.
Another important component of the film is the surrounding world, namely the location of the main shooting. Picturesque views of the Russian hinterland, especially for modern residents of large cities, touch the children's notes in the shower with warmth. At any time of the year, at the sight of a fragrant barbecue in the hands of Evgeny Morgunov, you probably want to go on your own picnic. Separately, I would like to note a bright animal image - a dog whose character gave the title to the film.

It's not good to jam fish with dynamite! Drinking alcoholic beverages is not nature - immoral! This is, in principle, the main message of the wonderful short film "Dog Barbos and an unusual cross", which was put in 1961 by the brilliant Soviet comediographer Leonid Gaidai. Of course, this tape is instructive and is designed to show citizens that dark designs will always be punished. And it does not matter whether the police see you or not: Providence will not leave you so easily. In the USSR, many social films were shot, designed to guide citizens on the true path, but only short films Gaidai gained a truly cult status. And he gained similar success thanks to two components: caustic satire, as well as participation in the filming of perhaps the most legendary comic trio of the Soviet period in the person Yuri Nikulin, George Vitsin and Evgeny Morgunov, which embodied respectively Balbes, Trusa and>
It so happened that the tape “Dog Barbos and the Unusual Cross” try to show on domestic channels in the company with another wonderful tape of Gaidai, “Trailists”. These projects are practically a continuation of each other and after decades they look like a whole. And if the latter in the foreground is ridiculing drunkenness, and even in the cold winter, the second first of all beats the reputation of poachers, who are activated mainly in the hot summer. However, it is impossible not to mention another character of these short films, which just acts as the voice of reason among our negligent Trinity! They are none other than the Dog Barbos, the faithful dog of the heroes, which nevertheless at the most critical moment destroys all the unscrupulous plans of the Trinity. In "Trackers," for example, the Dog steals a crucial pipe from a moonshine machine and thus begins an unstoppable chase through the winter forest. Well, in his “name” project, a cheerful dog jumps into the water for a stick with a dynamite checker and, of course, goes to his owners! So in the film “Dog Barbos and the Unusual Cross”, the chase begins in the opposite direction: now the negligent Trinity has to run away from her friend. However, now at stake is not just arrest in the police, but the most valuable thing that a person can have – his own health.
As in the rest of his short films with the participation of Nikulin, Vitsin and Morgunov, Gaidai refuses dialogue and conveys all the events with the help of amazing facial expressions and gestures of his wonderful actors. In addition, an important role in the plot is played by the soundtrack from Nikita Theologian, which managed to convey not only the general background of the narrative, but also voiced such trifles as the laughter of the characters, their fear and amazing stupidity!
But no matter how fun it is to watch the work of the actors’ faces, as in childhood and in adulthood, you simply cannot take your eyes off the screen when the very cross that we were told in the title begins. A series of hilarious gags, combined shooting, charming retro techniques that once seemed to be advanced innovations... Surprisingly, even after 50 years since the premiere of this short film, it still looks fun and fun. In addition, it is “Dog Barbos and the Unusual Cross” that will be especially interesting to the audience of the younger generation, as it describes the classic moments that are observed now in all kinds of episodes of animated series like “Tom and Jerry”. Well, the general seed of the narrative in the form of poaching is much more topical for today's young viewers than brewing.
In the end, I want to say that “Dog Barbos and the Unusual Cross” is one of the best comedies of the Soviet period. And even if it lasts only 14 minutes, but during this time the creators of the film have time to show us all their thoughts and ideas by issuing an almost perfect movie to guarantee an uplifting mood. This is very expensive!
People choose a dog as a pet for many reasons - so that the house is guarded, so that it is not so lonely, so that you can take a fishing / hunting with you. But not every dog understands the mysterious human nature that goes to the lake with dynamite. After all, in such a situation, he simply cannot help but intervene and try to help his misfit masters, even if they run away from him screaming.
Director Leonid Gaidai is very much loved for his full-length comedies, but do not forget that he was a great lover of shooting short stories and combining them into triptychs. And in the early 60s, he was just beginning to experiment with short meters, drawing inspiration from everyday life and coming up with unusual characters. And based on real events, Gaidai tells us about three not-so-lucky lawbreakers who decided to get a decent catch.
All great bandits start small, so Coward, Stupid and Experienced begin their screen criminal path with poaching. Choosing a weathery day, they happily go fishing, not forgetting to take with them and faithful dog Barbos. That's where everything goes awry. A dog cannot be explained that drowning a fish is not a game.
It was one of the very first appearances of the legendary trinity, consisting of Georgy Vitsin, Yuri Nikulin and Evgeny Morgunov, on the big screen. These talented actors managed to create unique images, which made a great gang. It is not surprising that years later they became one of the brightest comedy heroes of Soviet cinema.
Although this short film is less than 15 minutes, this did not prevent the director from conditionally dividing it into two parts. At the beginning of the film, Gaidai creates an atmosphere of carelessness, impunity, confidence of the heroes in their success. And then everything changes dramatically, quickly bringing the story to its climax. This comedy is more of a stunt, but modest special effects were used here, which made the heavy and traumatic chase from a stubborn dog even more interesting.
Taking a dog with you on a fishing trip and trying to drown the fish with dynamite tied to a stick - things are incompatible and can easily turn such a pastime into a life-threatening race.
