The best of the five. The first part of the franchise can be reviewed with pleasure over and over again. Well, the other one's pretty good, too. The third is also watchable, but further - without a bottle, as they say, can not do.
Resident Evil-1 is the beginning of a zombie apocalypse caused by a single person. The terrible virus “T” breaks loose and destroys all life in its path, turning people and animals in the secret laboratory of the largest private corporation in the world “Umbrella” into cruel and bloodthirsty creatures, driven only by the desire to satisfy hunger. Human.
The so-called “Hive” – the same laboratory, in an instant turned into a giant cemetery, where a squad of special forces is sent along with an employee of the security service “Ambrella” Alice (Mila Jovovich) and police Matt. Whose sister worked in the lab?
Even though Resident Evil is another story from a pleiad of those devoted to the living dead, this film, directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, looks in one breath and, among other things, attracts attention because here the characters die in a completely unexpected sequence. So, when I watched this film on TV for the first time and missed ten minutes, coming back to the screen, I was very surprised that the ranks of the special forces thinned literally in a matter of seconds.
As it turns out, excellent physical and combat training is not a guarantee that you can survive. The main thing is to be a little more quirky when meeting with the claws and teeth of zombies.
This fantastic horror film tells about the outbreak of a deadly epidemic in a confined space - where there is only one way out. It is clear that in the city you can hide somewhere, somewhere to run away, but here, in the “Hive” there is only one way to the surface, which puts before the heroes one condition: all or nothing. A few minutes in a country house, when the viewer has the opportunity to see the sky, trees, birds, are replaced by almost an hour and a half in the laboratories, however, the picture is not poor at all, on the contrary, the dynamic development of the plot and the regular change of locations lead to the fact that the trip of special forces with Alice and Matt turns into a wandering maze, for each turn of which the characters are waiting for mortal danger.
Fans of the genre can be satisfied, because here bloodthirsty zombies are completely devoid of any feelings and emotions, which turns them into a crushing weapon of mass destruction, and people desperately fighting for their own lives continue to be people (not everyone), united and united in the face of a common threat.
Resident Evil 1 contains both very violent scenes, and episodes that look with some disgust, and magnificently staged scenes of shootings and hand-to-hand combat. In short, this is a qualitatively filmed rubilovo with the revived dead, in which entertainment does its job - the movie looks with great pleasure and in one breath.
But look at you. I do not impose my opinion on anyone.
No Chris, no Jill, no S.T.A.R.S., no Tyrann. But there's Alice, Paul's future wife.
Of course, Paul Anderson and Milla Jovovich horribly abused one of the most famous gaming franchises, but they didn’t do it in the first film. The first “Resident Evil” is not that the adaptation of the debut game, it is a near-screen adaptation, stylized in an unusual for horror-movie format. In fact, here Anderson worked on the opposite method than previously in “Mortal Combat”, and limited for the most part only to references to the game, without introducing any of the characters in the plot. Now, watching the disfigured beyond recognition images of Leon, Chris, Claire, Wesker and other heroes, it seems that this was a really competent decision.
To transfer to more screens of the series “Resident Evil” would be more suitable now than the beginning of zero. However, it should be borne in mind that the final result was much better than one would expect. Little related to the game, Anderson’s picture is a sturdy atmospheric horror film in an enclosed space with a bunch of zombies, cerberas and lyzoons (in fact, three species of infected appear in the film). The tape has many flaws and blunders, but it stands out in its row. Add to this a great soundtrack and a couple of well-received scenes (including a beautiful prologue), and in general you can think that the film adaptation (not overloaded and with minimal timekeeping) succeeded. As a standalone film - perhaps as a film adaptation - the issue is more than controversial.
Why do people love Resident Evil games? Not for the graphics, which is not always at the top level, and not for the gameplay or interface, which until now many will rightly seem terribly uncomfortable. People love the franchise for its atmosphere and plot. If the atmosphere of the film is more or less in order (although on this point the tape is much inferior to the original), then in terms of the plot, the picture is quite mediocre and banal. The Resident Evil series has a stunningly rich historiography that could be handled much more flexibly.
Separate moments. Removing Chris and Jill from the plot, Anderson had to offer a rather strong protagonist instead of the main character nonsense we got. One of the biggest mistakes of the entire film adaptation branch is constructing a narrative around an uninteresting and knee-wrote character who tries to be all female game parts at once. Well, yeah, then she and Anderson got married and the franchise turned into a race to make my wife even cooler. And the fact that somewhere there continue to come out games with a fantastic plot, which could be and begin to equal for a change, they both did not care.
Little time is given to Spencer’s mansion (here Spence’s name belongs to another “don’t understand who”). The line with the Red Queen is quite crooked and rejective. Characters of members of the Umbrella squad are either poorly disclosed or not disclosed at all. Matt with his references to Leon is nothing at all. Some zombies with their strange behavior should train more or listen less to their dance consultant.
And yet the first film is received with more warmth than the others, since Anderson and Jovovich have not yet turned it into their family saga à la Furious, and the picture can still be perceived normally. But winter was coming.

Thick, banal and obliterated references to Alice Carroll, it is not clear why flashing on the screen, only Anderson was needed, adding a far-fetched philosophical subtext to the picture.
After reviewing the Resident Evil series of games, you will definitely want to appreciate the most praised series among the adaptations of games. Definitely, there will be disappointments, but this is not exactly the case.
First you remember the song ' Who is Alice?' because that is the name of the main character performed by Milla Jovovich. Not Jill Valentine as you might expect, much less Chris Redfield. It's Alice. In the course of the film, a squad of special forces will appear in the plot. If you try to find someone familiar among them, in a series of games, do not try. There is not a single character in the film.
You might say -' How is that? What is the film adaptation, where only the name is similar?'
That's not true. Monsters like zombies and Slimer are abundant here. The action takes place in a laboratory, the entrance to which is located in a mansion near the city of Raccoon. The location of the action is transferred to the screen from the game reliably, but the events taking place in the film suggest that even if it was not originally conceived, this is a prequel to the game line. After that, all the questions like ' And where are my favorite characters?', disappear.
The film tells what happened and why, where and how it all began. Shooting and blood here in moderation, classic high-tech laboratories from the original recreated perfectly, especially the beloved laser security system. Computer graphics, especially Slimer, now of course may not look good, but the impression does not spoil.
Well, it is impossible not to mention the main musical theme from Marilyn Manson himself, it is simply chic, sets the tone and atmosphere of what is happening.
As a result, whether you are familiar with the game series or not, the film will definitely please you, but don’t get used to it, because it has sequels that... that’s another story.

I first saw Resident Evil on TV when I was 13. The film made an indelible impression on me, intrigued, frightened, firmly ingrained in my memory and influenced me in many ways. I consider it one of my favorites and review it regularly. I haven’t played the game yet.
“Resident Evil” just fascinates with its atmosphere. Every time I watch a movie, I feel this mystery and darkness. And every time zombies first appear, I shudder. Here it is a combination of many factors – and good directing, and color scheme, and the right scenery, and first-class zombies, which now look very impressive. But crucially, the film's composer was Marilyn Manson. Its influence is great and limitless, the music creates a perfect mood, and therefore I consider the first part the most successful – in the rest there is no such unity of music with what is happening on the screen.
The film's frank diamond is Mila Jovovich. You can write whole sheets of enthusiastic odes, but you just look at how beautiful this smooth transition from a gentle, memoryless, seemingly weak girl to a clearly adjusted murder weapon with a determined look is! How her facial features gradually change as she approaches the clue. It's a first-class acting game. I consider her outfit very significant - red, light, feminine dress and rough practical boots without heels, thank God! If Alice were wetting her enemies on studs, the image would be a failure. Michelle Rodriguez, extremely convincing in the image of a boy-baba with eternal gum in her mouth, plays well in contrast to Mila Jovovich. Men also did not disappoint - the diversity of the characters allows you to navigate them well and not to be confused with anyone, which in recent films has become a total curse.
Dobermans, lovingly hung makeup, every time please my eyes. I keep saying that a living object is always better than a painted one. Speaking of painting. There is one thing that has lost its charm over time. I mean the final monster. Of course, now it is already clear that he is rather uncasist, but we need to remember more often what year it is.
I think it would not be an exaggeration to call this film a modern classic.

The film is wonderful and magical. All the fans of the computer game Resident Evil, all the fans of zombies, action and Milla Jovovich, very, very lucky that Paul Anderson made this film. This film is truly magical, not always the film adaptations of the games are good films that have been successful with fans of these games, but the Resident Evil, knocked out of this general series, the plot, actors, special effects and some magic of cinema, which makes this film unlike any other.
Milla Jovovich once again proved that she is not just a beauty, but also a talented actress, cheerful, fearless, strong. Her character Alice is not a character in the game Resident Evil, but her play and self-sufficiency turned her into the main character of the film. It is very interesting to watch the reincarnation of Alice, the course of her thoughts and memories of the past. Well, in general, she is a real beauty and in a red dress she is just sexy.
Michelle Rodriguez, this posh female soldier, without a shadow of doubt and superfluous emotions, she knows her worth and she is so good that I was shocked by the last scenes of the film. Michelle is such a complete personality and heroine, which causes only enthusiastic responses.
Before us action-fiction and horror in one bottle, and in these genres it is magnificent, the first appearance of zombies frightening and terrifying, and the scenes with dogs still make you cry heart, although I do not consider myself to be easily frightened by the audience, and the anthill itself, its laboratories filled with the walking dead, just creepy, all this is at the highest level. In addition, the film is filled with the atmosphere and gloom that I like so much in horror films.
I think the film was a success and the scene with the laser mesh is just a brain explosion, for it the director is special thanks.

On the eve of the release of the final part of "Resident Evil" it's time to refresh the memory and review the very first part of the nettle. In fact, it can be considered an exemplary film about the zombie apocalypse, which does not lose its relevance even after 13 years! Paul Anderson with his wife Mila Jovovich for a good decade manages to keep the viewer at bay, as well as forcing him to believe in a female superhero. The inexplicable factor that a person is special and immune to the virus, and even vice versa, can excite anyone. As for the first part, this is an introductory series where Alice (Mila) is not yet reaching her potential, but rather attracts more with her red dress, which I would say has become a symbol associated with this film, and is afraid of herself and what she can do. If you watch the film for the first time, you can see that the heroine was slightly confused and turned on only when extreme measures were required from her.
Acting still in a limited space, the cleaning service, who have not yet understood what they are involved in, descend into the "Hive" . This is the name of the secret laboratory of the corporation Umbrella. Another thing that may scare mere mortals is the fact that there are whole systems that control many areas of life. Especially as important as chemical weapons. And then there is the question of life and death, when they are ready to sacrifice people for the salvation of all mankind. But the virus is very insidious and the red queen security system is too. All these horrors, coupled with dynamically developing events and cool music, create its own atmosphere and tickle nerves. Fully sustained, in my opinion, the genre of the action movie, and really worth the adaptation based on a computer game. You can see the combat training of the actors. Especially, I would say the fearless Michel Rodrigue (Rane) played well. This is who managed to make a predatory facial expression and walk with a machine gun to the advantage, as if she had undergone serious training in special forces. The rest, very nice actors Matt (Eric Mabias), Spance (James Purfoy), Van (Colin Salmon) and Kaplan (Martin Cruze), who gave their all. In general, a very good start to the franchise, which is really addictive with its plot and dynamics. I want to continue watching as the T-virus breaks out in Raccoon City and begins to “walk” around the world. Add something new to the numerous reviews is quite difficult, because it has already become a classic of the apocolyptical genre, as well as in his time “Freddy Kruger” in the genre of horror. So because of the sensational story and justification at the box office, it is worth spending an hour and a half watching Resident Evil.
Making films based on the plots of computer games is a thankless affair just as much as writing reviews to them, especially if these films have already become anything but classic. Despite the fact that many people did not leave a lively place on the first "Resident Evil", throwing it from head to toe with a variety of criticism with an emphasis on illogicality, protractedness and dullness, and most importantly - complete incompatibility with the game, it is difficult to question the fact that Paul Anderson's creation is an important and impeccable representative of the horror-fighter genre, and I, as a person who did not play in the original source and watched this film for the first time, it is much easier to evaluate his video game fan. But still, I really like everything that has a direct or indirect relationship to zombies, so let’s start.
Umbrella Corporation (Umbrella) is the most influential commercial organization in the world, whose underground activities are the creation of secret viral weapons. The underground chemical laboratory called “Anthroat”, located near the town of Raccoon city, is one of the important strategic facilities that have been infected by an experimental virus. The computer system, noticing what was wrong, blocked all the entrances and exits, and therefore all the staff of the laboratory died ... or not. In the center of the plot is a young girl named Alice, who wakes up with severe amnesia and haunting her constant hallucinations. Soon she meets a local police officer and rescue service sent by the corporation to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
The plot is interesting, although it has many unsaid elements, and the relationship between the characters for no reason is tied up in a strong knot. The action is not bad, and in some moments very much. For example, the scenes with the laser corridor and hellish Dobermans turned out to be very spectacular, and this is probably the most interesting thing in the film, since he has obvious problems with computer graphics, and the monster, which, I believe, was supposed to be the “decoration” of the tape, came out, to put it mildly, not very well. Zombies took on a classic look, being something between the wretched dead in "Zombies named Sean" and reactive in "28 days later". The music is good in some places and superfluous in some places.
To the work of Mila Jovovich I am very neutral. The only film with her participation that I have seen, and probably already a dozen times, is the cult "Fifth Element". Due to the fact that Mila is a very charismatic actress, the roles of such a plan, namely the heroine saving the world or the most special girl in the universe, suit her more than anyone else. I wonder why a talented Kievan woman was not approved for the main role in the film "Lucy", and even with "Luke Besson" at the director's chair, which gave the world the same "Fifth Element". So, this time, Mila did not look any worse.
I don’t know why, but most people liked a character named Rain, whereas I was terribly mad at her, and I waited throughout the film for a bunch of angry zombies to drag her away or someone to shoot at last. Michelle Rodriguez I was annoyed not only with her overplay, but also with her wild masculinity, something more like a shitty boyish tone. I understand that a female soldier should look like this, but, for example, the image of a tough cop performed by Sienna Guillory in the second part of the franchise looked much more convincing and cooler in one word. The characters of Eric Mabias and James Purfoy were not remembered or liked. Too disposable.
"Resident Evil" - a good fantastic horror fighter, which has a good plot in its arsenal, several worthy action scenes and a talented Mila Jovovich. The film is no better than its counterparts.
Paul W. S. Anderson is considered one of the best entertainment directors of his generation, but his career is not even. He learned his first success, making a full-fledged blockbuster from the computer game Mortal Kombat, costing a relatively small amount, kindly allocated by the producers to the novice filmmaker. After the success of Deathly Battle, Anderson was free to film whatever he wanted. And the restless Paul did not change his hobbies, and continued to study the fantastic genre, filming such notorious films of the 90s as the space thriller “Through the Horizon” and the tough action movie “Soldier” with the participation of Kurt Russell. These films cannot be called masterpieces, but they still have their own zest. Which makes you come back to them over and over again. Unfortunately, at one time, the audience did not appreciate such efforts of Anderson, from which both “Through the Horizon” and “Soldier” failed miserably at the box office, practically putting an end to the subsequent successful career of the director in Hollywood. Indeed, Anderson did not hear anything sensible for quite a while, until he triumphantly returned to Olympus with his perhaps most famous painting, Resident Evil. As in the case of “Deathly Battle”, this film was staged on the computer game of the same name. At one time, Resident Evil (1996) became one of the most popular entertainment for the public and acquired many game sequels. The popularity of the creation of Capcom studio had no limits and subsequently a series of games about the confrontation of people with hordes of zombies became a real cult that demanded appropriate respect. The developers of Resident Evil have long wanted to expand the limits of their creation’s popularity to cinematic spaces, but annoying little things constantly interfered in the process, and the promising project was postponed all the time. With the arrival of Paul W. S. Anderson on the directorial post, the situation moved from a dead point, but without cardinal changes in the structure of the narrative was not done. Anderson came up with the main character of his film from scratch, adding to her certain features of some of the characters of the original game and built the film as a tense thriller in which you can find hints of both Alien and Dawn of the Dead.
So, the plot of Ilma introduces us to Alice (Mila Jovovich). The girl wakes up in a spacious mansion and at the same time does not remember how she got here, and who she really is. The situation is aggravated when a group of fully armed soldiers led by the First (Colin Salmon) bursts into it. Deep beneath the mansion is a huge laboratory of the powerful Umbrella Corporation, which develops innovative technologies, including for sale to the armed forces. And now in an instant, all communication with the object “Hive” is cut off, and the laboratory itself is blocked in order not to release unwanted products of classified production from it. As it turns out, Alice works for the security services of the corporation and the military take her down with them to help them get to the truth. But, unfortunately, memory comes to the heroine too late, and she does not have time to warn the soldiers about what they will have to meet. Because of the rash action of one of the Umbrella employees, a dangerous virus is chosen to free itself, which in the blink of an eye turned unfortunate scientists into bloodthirsty zombies. In addition, under his influence on the light appeared formidable mutants, which a simple weapon can not stop. So Alice has to recall her fighting skills and show in connection with which the fragile-looking girl was invited to military service in a company that was quite capable of ruling the world.
If you do not know that “Resident Evil” is staged on a computer game, then it is difficult to rank it among a number of films that grew out of the products of the gaming industry. Paul W.S. Anderson has done his best and seems to have catered to all Capcom fans, even though his film is strikingly different from the game itself. From the first minutes, “Resident Evil” attracts the viewer with its mystery. We are not in a hurry to explain what the world we see through the eyes of Alice. The director played a lot with colors and delightful visualization. The introductory part of the picture can not boast of a variety of colors, but such a circumstance was created solely for the sake of the main character being strikingly different from the rest of the outside world with her chic red dress, which seems to hint that Alice is not so simple as it seems at first glance. It will become a symbol of the entire franchise and its main advantage. However, for now she appears before us as a victim of an unfortunate coincidence.
Mila Jovovich immediately found a common language with Paul W. S. Anderson, with whom, a few years after filming, she tied herself up with strong family ties. The warmth of their feelings is felt in the first Resident Evil quite powerfully and it is noticeable to the naked eye. The director created an entire ode to his heroine and every shot in which she appears is worthy of being admired. Alice always attracts attention and even in that period of timekeeping, when she is not trusted with active actions, it is interesting to watch her. Well, when Mila Jovovich has the opportunity to remember all her fighting skills, which she was famous for since the time of the Fifth Element, then her image begins to sparkle from the screens. Her every move, smirk and decision can delight! Mila completely steals the franchise and from the first film it becomes clear that without her, Resident Evil would be as dead as zombies.
Separately, I want to note the wonderful secondary cast. The most colorful personality among the formidable, short-spoken military is another favorite of the public, Michelle Rodriguez, who was honored to play the role of Raine, a fighter girl capable of giving odds to any trained man. Rodriguez is very much in the face of this image, which she exploits throughout her career and is pleased that Paul Anderson did not force her to play superfluous experiences, but allowed her to remain a fighter until the very end. That’s what it means to see the main advantage in the actress and exploit it, without exchanging for small things.
As for the film as a whole, he pleases with his style, which is not based on expensive computer graphics, but on the contrary tries to be as down to earth as possible in such projects. Paul W.S. Anderson directed Resident Evil as a tribute to good old zombie horrors that are diluted with a small infusion of game fiction. Of course, without special effects in the picture can not do, but they do not switch all attention to themselves. While watching “Resident Evil”, you are primarily interested in living heroes and together with them try to get to the truth. There will also be surprises in the story, and not a little. So watching the tape is a must!
I revisited Resident Evil (1) and was very pleased. I like this movie, although I understand that it is thrash, brain gum (2).
The first part is much simpler and cheaper than the others, and this is its beauty. The techniques used are clear and simple - no super-heavy special effects, graphics and complex costumes or dolls, most of the suspense is pumped up by music or its sudden absence, mixed with imaginary and real irritants appearing from behind the edge of the frame, then from some part of the scenery. Those special effects that exist, such as a corridor with lasers, are elementary and cheap to perform, but they look, at the same time, according to the film itself, do not knock out, create an atmosphere. Although the plot is banal (3), but kind, contagion, even intrigue is half a movie. You sit there and wonder if Milka is good or if she is misanthropic.
If you are going to watch the film, and English is close to you and native, then I strongly recommend the widow to the movie to have a soundtrack with comments by Anderson, Bolt, Jovovich and Rodriguez. Actresses have fun in every possible way, and the director and the producer tell how they dumped a Doberman in spaghetti Bolognese to make him look like a zombie dog.
(1) – usually translated as 'Residence Evil' but this is not quite correct. 'Residence' Still 'residence' Here we are not talking about the conditions in which evil lives, but about the fact that it is settled and is a resident, ' living ' I offer as an alternative version of the Russian title of the film and franchise - 'Evil for permanent residence'.
(2) Brain gum and a zombie movie. Haha.
(3) - A crowd of zombies, as a consequence of a virus and an uncontrolled Artificial Idiot, da Mila Jovovich in a red dress knee-deep.
Gemindustria owes infinitely to British director Paul W. S. Anderson. If it weren’t for this talented young man, Hollywood producers would be fleeing video game adaptations like the plague. And you would be right, because the vast majority of adaptations. “Hitman” is a rare slag (let’s not be ashamed of expressions), “Max Payne” – pity there is no puking emoji, “Prince of Persia” or “Lara Croft” – well, this is for fans of wretched studio pop, and for “Doom” someone would rip off their hands. In the furnace, you can safely throw 90% of film adaptations of games for cinema. But the first “Mortal Kombat” (1995) (for the uninformed “Deathly Battle”) has always been quoted by fans of bloody fighting and those many who as a child filled with a Segovo joystick calluses on their fingers, trying to repeat a 20-digit fatality, will confirm that the film adaptation from the independent studio New Line looked especially cool then, in the late 90s. Resident Evil is exactly the same story. The film immediately captivated the audience, although he did not particularly try to match the game. Of course, both adaptations were directed by Anderson, who in addition to them also has successful game projects Death Race with Statham and Alien vs Predator. However, the series “Resident Evil” is still the “crown” of Anderson, because he produced all the parts and personally put four of them (including the 6th, which is not far off).
A little history. Many years ago, in the days of hardcore, the brilliant Japanese zombie horror "Biohazard / Resident evil" (in the common people "Resident") made a rustle in video games, making stutters not one hundred normal children, and especially impressionable immediately paralyzed the brain. Dark narrow corridors, terrible sharp sounds, vile zombies, suddenly jumping out in uncomfortable places and trying to bite off the hero’s head were multiplied by inconvenient camera angles and difficult control. The ammunition was enough to shoot himself, and the diversity and ugliness of the creatures was explained only by the inflamed imagination of the developers. All the inconveniences were compensated by a magnificent storyline, a chic atmosphere of a zombie apocalypse and difficult puzzles. The hero, all alone (not that now - a peep-puff in a cheerful cooperative) slowly unwinded the plot tangle, rushing to the door in panic at the first rustle and panickingly afraid to look around the corner.
So what did Anderson do? Atmospheric action-thriller in the spirit of “Aliens”, where a group of special forces + a couple of civilians cheerfully storm the abode of evil. In principle, it’s no exaggeration to say that Anderson just ripped off Cameron’s concept, but that doesn’t spoil the film at all and you quickly forget about it. Immersion in the den of zombies called “Hive” and created by the villainous syndicate “Umbrella” is extremely interesting. Best part of the movie. Not a single zombie in the frame, and the tension is off the scale and there is intrigue. In addition, Anderson, who had a good experience in film fiction, seasoned zombie horror with artificial intelligence, creating another antagonist - a supercomputer in the form of a hologram of a little girl. There was no such thing in the game, but the move was extremely successful. The sinister juvenile creature extinguishes people with Terminator emotions, cutting off limbs with elevators, shanking lasers and pouring water worse than in the Titanic. The scene in the white corridor is just uber-cool and comparable only with similar episodes from “Cuba” Vincenzo Natalie, from where it was obviously correctly borrowed.
The second half of the film is worse than the first. Along with the hordes of zombies, Hollywood stupidity appears. At the sight of the dead, brave special forces immediately attack brain atrophy and a good third of the tape they do not understand that you need to shoot a walker in the heads. Only when the youngster chews up the meaning of life for the heroes, they begin to think in the right direction, but it is too late, because not only almost all ammunition was spent, but also human resources. Milla Jovovich from surprise begins to show special techniques in the spirit of Bessonian Lila or Mortalkombat princess Kitana (who likes it more), turning hitherto normal action into some kind of farce. (It’s amazing that this superhero thing has taken root and fallen in love with the viewer, because it clearly contradicts the atmosphere of the game.) In this part, the director also clearly overdid it with blah blah blah, pretty slowing down the action. The ending is frankly weak and makes it clear that the filmmakers lacked the budget to create something more brutal than a fight with an unimpressive CGI hunter. Cameron's final escape (in Aliens) was an order of magnitude better. Okay, two orders of magnitude.
Despite the previous boo-boo-boo-absatz, it must be admitted that Anderson and Co. correctly captured the atmosphere of the game, which is most accurately characterized by the already annoying word “sinister”. On this basis, they clearly planted several ideas successfully tested on the audience from time-tested movies. Lured into the project a couple of stars, including traditionally cool Michelle Rodriguez and dangerously beautiful Milla Jovovich, who later became the muse of Anderson not only in this franchise, but also in life. What else? Another great main theme "Resident Evil Main Theme", created not by anyone, but by Marilyn Manson himself, and in general the whole soundtrack. In short, the authors made a generally successful film adaptation, but, like all Anderson films, it lacked something to achieve the ideal. What? See paragraph above. In any case, fans of the game were grateful for at least such an action version of “Resident evil”, which is incomparably better than a vague movie file in the spirit of “Hitman” or “Duma”. “Resident Evil” did not tear the viewer apart (in a good sense), but gave a lot of good impressions.
Why is it red? Ask the creator of the game Shinji Mikami or the famous director George Romero, on whose dead films and created the series “Biohazard”. They will probably tell you that zombie horrors in the style of “Resident” are bloody tones.
For a long time, I thought Paul Anderson and Paul Anderson were the same director. And wondered how the author of “Magnolia” and “Oil” could give birth to “Mortal Kombat”. And then I found out that Paul Thomas and Paul W.S. are different people.
I laughed about the movie.
In some bright future was in America the town of Enotsk (Enotograd tozh), and deep under it was a giant underground laboratory of the terrible Corporation "Umbrella". One day, one cone was stolen from the lab and the other was broken. After that, all workers were strangled with an analogue of the LOX system, and the elevators were dropped.
In the country house comes to himself suffering from amnesia Alice. The bursting squad of special forces promptly reminds her that there is a narrow gauge under the house, which serves as an emergency entrance to the laboratory, and she seems to be a safety guard guarding this exit. And the team, in fact, need to crawl into the laboratory to find out what to do.
There is no justice in life. Uwe Ball for the film adaptation of the games, they are beating in the tail and in the mane, declaring the second Ed Wood, and for some reason they did not pay attention to the quality of this, let me say, film adaptation. What does this movie have to do with Resident Evil ("Biohazard)? Very -- indirect. The city, the underground complex of the company "Umbrella", a mutagen that turns people into zombies. It's there. Where are all the heroes of the game? No. But there is an original female character - Alice. There's an AI with a little girl's personality. There is an indistinct atmosphere of horror and non-combatant.
It's not a film adaptation. It's fan fiction. And bad, when everything is done in order to replace the canonical characters with their own, albeit not up to the quality.
Bad.
When I was a kid with a curly head, I had a Playstation and Reisdent Evil was one of the games. I really liked the game and left positive memories - it was scary, with a great atmosphere and a well-developed background. Well, I was waiting for the film adaptation with great zeal and when the film finally came out, I was disappointed. The plot was the same "horror category B", but lost those remnants of logic that were there and instead of beloved characters introduced Alice, who is out of nowhere took the key character and, gradually, turning into pure Mary Sue (not killed heroine, which everyone needs and has a bunch of other cheating abilities). As for the other characters... Well, they're very charismatic for extras. Looking ahead, I will say that further Anderson stuck characters from the game into his films, but he did it so mediocrely that horror.
As for the plot:
He repeats the plot of the first game with an interspersion of script arbitrariness of Anderson and the lack of squeezed scenes from other games in the series. Some of them, like the laser scene, are good, but most of them look bad. Well, Terrible Girl in the role of the local analogue of Skynet - beyond good and evil.
Action:
Too predictable and boring and, to be honest, not too fitting with the name “Resident Evil” – you expect a creepy atmosphere and viscous narrative, and you get indistinct gunshots and acrobatics, which is not bad, but “wrong”.
I will not discuss the acting game - after all, a "category B fighter". However, I note that Mila Jovovich walked the whole film with one expression.
What's the bottom line:
Bad. As for a horror movie, too little scary, for an action movie - too boring action, and for a movie on the game - too much script arbitrariness. More like a fanfiction written by a 14-year-old girl who learned about the existence of the game from a Wikipedia article and represents herself in place of Alice. It's only been filmed for some reason.
How many times have I watched this particular part of the franchise because it's the most atmospheric and scary. And even though there is more action in the other parts, only the first film really made me worry about every character.
I know that George Romero himself could have directed the film. But I think he would have done something less dynamic and intense than Paul. Who knows, though.
Now actors. They played very well. Even episodic characters are remembered. But of course, the best of all were the main actresses: Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez. Not to mention Colin Salmon, whose character was very charismatic and memorable.
That's it. Now there are five parts, but most of all I love this one. Paul Anderson is a test.
The first part Residents of evil set the fashion in the cinema for zombie viruses. It was with it that large corporations and people in white coats working in them became associated with ruthless destroyers of humanity, albeit not special.
The film is good to show the actions of the corporation itself.
Umbrella. In developing a new drug, they do not shy away from experiments on people, and the scientists working for them largely do not care what they do, as long as their labor is generously paid. The experiments are conducted in a secret hidden object, so as not to cause questions, neither the authorities nor the local residents. So the very atmosphere of the secret object and the people involved in it created excellent.
The script is pretty good, too. The main character lost her memory, so through dialogues with her and her memories, we are easily and easily introduced into the plot. The actions of the combat group sent to deal with the emergency situation look conscious and justified. Ticking countdown and crowds of zombies around perfectly escalate the situation.
The actors did their job well. The main character performed by Mila Jovovich perfectly portrayed the gradual return of former skills. James Pufroy portrayed a truly canonical traitor. And even the eternally dissatisfied face of Michelle Rodriguez was this film very fitting.
We see a good example of an entertaining movie, allowing you to have a good couple of hours.

Umbrella Corporation, Raccoon City, T-virus are words from the universe of Resident Evil that are familiar to many. The main place in this universe is the eponymous series of games. But thanks to the efforts of Paul W. S. Anderson, now there is also a series of films on the Residence. Many will agree that the most striking picture is the first part. What is so special about the 2002 film?
1) Detective component.
The plot of the film is intriguing. In the process of viewing there are many questions that will be answered over time. A lot of mystery and confusion. It is these qualities that distinguish the first picture from the subsequent ones, in which the place of the detective component is occupied by a continuous and linear action.
2) The main characters
No, it's not Milla Jovic, but all of us favorite zombies. The Walking Dead of 2002 are different from their future counterparts. They're less fast and nimble. They don't have a variety of tentacles and special killing skills. But they're still hungry and stupid. In a word, classic.
3 Pearl of the film
That's Mila. In the first part, she not only looks younger, but also more natural. She doesn't have superpowers like Project Alice. It is worth remembering how from the second part the heroine destroyed monsters by hundreds, and here even a simple fight with zombies seems deadly. It is this Mila that viewers will not miss in the rest of the film epic.
Output
How much "Resident Evil" do not shoot, the main success will be for the first films. First impressions are the strongest. And despite the fact that a dozen years have passed, the picture will still be interesting for both fans and ordinary viewers.

Many fans of video games have heard about the famous horror series Resident Evil. This horror, in fact, created the genre of Survival horror, although over time the series turned into a good action, having gone from its origins. In 2002, a film based on this series was released. In the director’s chair sat Paul W. S. Anderson, who gave the world the famous “Deathly Battle”. The main role was assigned to the star of the film “Fifth element” Milla Jovovich.
The film takes place near Raccoon City. Somewhere here is a mysterious mansion, under which a secret laboratory is located, in which terrible experiments are carried out. A squad of special forces enters the laboratory, which turns out to be inhabited by terrible monsters. Now our heroes have to make every effort to survive and escape from this hell.
The plot of the picture has a slight resemblance to the story told in the series of games. And the word based on motives is the best fit for this picture. Also in the film you will not find a single character. In general, all that connects the film with the game is the title, some similarities in the plot, Umbrella Corporation and zombies. This could certainly disappoint fans of the series. However, people who are not interested in this game may like the film.
“Resident Evil” is a good fantastic action movie with elements of horror. However, the picture does not stand out much from other similar films. Despite this, the tape will appeal to fans of the series of games “Resident evil”, as well as those who love movies about zombies and all fans of Mila Jovic.

P.S. The director managed to create a good movie on a computer game. However, it was not possible to repeat the success of the "Deathly Battle". Despite this, the viewer liked the film, the picture collected a good box office. There have been many sequels since then. It is regrettable to admit that over time the series became weaker and weaker until it turned into a terrible thrash.
Paul W. S. Anderson's 2002 film Resident Evil was a breakthrough in zombie cinema. Although the film based on the computer game “Resident Evil” was not very accepted by critics, but I still consider it one of the best films made on games. Of course, there are changes, and the movie is very different from the game, but I used to think that games are made to play and movies are made to watch. I write this as a fan of the Resident Evil series.
The plot of the film is interesting, even instructive. It's not clear what's going on at first, but then when you watch the movie from start to finish, it all falls into place. Moral: Do not break the law, do not harm nature. It turned out to be a very good combination of action and horror (for a zombie movie it used to be rare), there are no tiresome scenes, it was interesting to watch and watch every moment. There were moments that could scare and delight.
Special effects, just right. No too much as in The Matrix: Reboot. There were so many exciting moments with and without the use of weapons. Shots and explosions are very high quality. The zombie makeup and the zombies themselves look very scary and frightening. I can say the same about monsters.
I used to think that if you take the music out of a movie, it’s not a movie at all. The soundtracks of Beltrami and Manson are absolutely amazing. I really liked the main musical theme for the film. Dark music with a rocker tinge gives the film a special genre, as in the films of Carpenter. No complaints about the soundtrack.
The acting game is pretty good here. To me, of course, this is the only film where Mila Jovovich did a great job with her role. Alice seems to us at first a weak woman who does not understand what is happening here. Then her memory gradually comes to her and from a defenseless girl she turns into a fearless fighter. I would also like to mention the game of Mabius, Purfoy and Rodriguez.
Of course, this is not the first time Anderson has made great movies on games. Resident Evil is one of his best works. This film has the right to exist, and be recognized as one of the best films made by games. Of the shortcomings, it is probably possible to note only the absence of characters from the original game and some blunders in the film.

This film became one of the most famous in the genre "zombie horror", that is, horror films about the living dead. Opponents of the genre, do not rush to go further in search of another film. After all, “Resident Evil” is not some stupid dismemberment with bloody faces of zombies. It’s a movie that’s really expensive, not just on budget. And even those who hate horror can like it. After all, this is more than an exciting story about a group of special forces who were tasked with defusing an underground laboratory infected with a dangerous virus. Together with the fighters, this real abode of evil (the name is quite eloquent!) will penetrate a young beautiful girl and a novice policeman. What awaits them in the lair of the computer mind, thinking something dangerous? And who are they? What will happen if they fail their mission? In my opinion, this film emphasizes the notorious omnipotence of the American monopolies, in the image of a criminal corporation that has enveloped the whole world and is doing its job using people in the most illegal ways.
Super-modern special effects do their job - the film pleases the eye with its spectacularity. We know old films of this genre, which without special effects are able to please the viewer: first of all, this is “White Zombie” in 1932 and “Night of the Living Dead” in 1968. But there is more to this film that makes it a legend. This film received four sequels, and the fourth and fifth parts were much weaker than the first trilogy, despite the 3D effects. But we watched them with interest, delving back into the story, because this is our favorite Resident Evil. All parts, except the third, are filmed based on the computer game of the same name, the last parts of which are also created animated films. I read that before the first film was made, all the actors were forced to play the game in which the film was made so that they knew the basis of what they were involved in. It is worth noting that “Resident Evil” is the only movie about zombies, in which explained, because of what the zombie epidemic began.
In addition to professional and amateur translations, this film was translated by the Goblin: as usual - literally, without censorship. And recently, a parody translation from the studio “Verb Clip Video” was created, which ridicules the whole idea of the film. Instead of a criminal corporation and a dangerous virus, there appears a McDonald’s store and its products, which began to add specially bred weed. Killer phrases and mocking soundtracks make you laugh throughout most of the translation. Music often drowns out the silent voice of the translator. A little mat, although you could do without it. In my opinion, this ridiculous translation is not inferior to the Goblin.
This is the third horror film in my life, and from fiction and action movies, it is also one of the first. This film belongs to several genres at once, and in all it occupies a leading position. This film has fully earned its popularity. Fans of the genre, and not only - watch it.
I didn’t play the game, but I really liked the movie. If George Romero was the director, it would be a very boring and boring movie.
Paul Anderson also shot a rather dynamic horror film with an admixture of an action movie.
The plot, of course, is not new. However, the film gradually acquires its own line, drags, and to find out how it all ends, very interesting. An impressive ending that will not leave you indifferent.
The acting is great. All the actors played very well. I especially liked the performance of Milla Jovovich, Eric Mabias and Michelle Rodriguez. And everyone else was very good.
Bottom line: Paul Anderson shot the best part of the film franchise, which can be reviewed more than once.
10 out of 10
The screening of the computer game Resident Evil was a real godsend for the viewer and a gold mine for the producers. By the time of writing this review, 5 parts of the film franchise have already been released, and by the fall of 2014 Paul Anderson plans to release the sixth series. But whatever it was, and the original film “Resident Evil” is the strongest among all subsequent films.
And even though in 2002 there was not yet the notorious 3D, and the budget of the picture was quite modest, yet this did not prevent the “Residence...” from becoming one of the best zombie horrors in modern cinema and getting (quite deservedly) millions of fans around the world. This success is attributed to several reasons.
First, Paul Anderson already had experience in filming a popular computer game (in 1995 he directed “Deathly Battle”), so it was difficult to call him a beginner in this case. Second, he wrote a pretty decent and solid script. And thirdly, it was noticeable that the creators of the picture approached its production with all seriousness and responsibility, accurately thinking through all the details and trifles.
The implementation of the plan is also in order. Resident Evil has all the components that the genre requires. And most importantly, all these components look harmonious and convincing. A good plot (as mentioned above), bright and interesting characters (Alice and Raine), realistically moving dead, spectacular action scenes, more or less good visual effects (at the time), and the most important thing is a perfectly selected atmosphere that keeps in suspense and instills a note of fear throughout the film, and also a killer soundtrack written by the great and terrible Marilyn Manson especially for the film. The advantages of this picture can be listed indefinitely. It is no wonder that in the world box office the picture has collected more than $ 100 million, paying off its budget three times. After such success, questions about the sequel did not even arise.
Now I do not want to touch on the variable successes of the rest of the franchise, because by the fifth series there were so many things that my mother did not grieve. But such atmosphericity, such tension and even to some extent suspense does not possess any of the sequels. This is the most sinister and best part of the franchise. Therefore, the horror genre can be ranked only in the first film. Everyone else is more entertaining than frightening.
In the end, I want to note that Resident Evil is a living example for all followers of how to screen computer games. Moreover, this film has become a favorite for many viewers not only in the context of a zombie movie, but in general. Including mine.
Resident Evil is a spectacular and dynamic fantasy action movie with horror elements directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. Personally, I really like this movie, and when I saw it a long time ago, this film caught my imagination. This story is made qualitatively and interestingly, and this film is two-bottom, and I always liked such twisted stories. This sci-fi film has an original and impressive story that is unlike anything else, and at one time this film was very popular. I've seen all the parts of Resident Evil, but that first part is my favorite.
We see the main character who wakes up with amnesia, and she does not remember anything. Soon the place where she woke up, the military breaks in, and they take her with them to a secret laboratory, located deep underground, and here we see that there was a virus infection, and all people died, but soon the heroes of this story realize that all who worked here have become the living dead, and we see a dynamic, fantastic story that excites and keeps in suspense, and it is impossible to break away from it.
I never really liked Milla Jovovich, but I have to admit that she is a strong actress who became a hero in zombie battles, and her face became significant in the genre of fiction and zombie movies. In that first film, I liked her, and she played sensually and emotionally. I liked Michelle Rodriguez the most in this film, and her character was very sorry.
"Resident Evil" is a high-quality, big-budget film that I love. The rest of the parts are no longer as cool as this, so this movie undoubtedly deserves attention and positive evaluation. Watch Resident Evil, and this fantastic thriller will take you into a spectacular and terrible story, to break away from which it is simply impossible, and you will see pure evil and how the characters of the film tried to survive where it is impossible.
Good to see you!
Resident Evil is one of the most iconic zombie games and games in general. I’ve already lost count of how many Resident Evil games there are. It seems that there are 6 parts that tell the main story and a huge, incalculable number of all sorts of additions and such game spin-offs that come out almost every year. But Anderson decided to go his own way and adapted a series of films that are almost unrelated to the game.
No, I was wrong. Still, 4, 5 and subsequent parts will take much of the main narratives of the game, but 1, 2 and 3 are almost independent adaptations and thanks to them, U.S. became famous; but not only the director himself, but also Michel Rodriguez paired with Mila Jovavich. The latter, by the way, became the hallmark of this franchise. Many will agree with me, because without her it is difficult to imagine the whole series of films.
But it was all lyrics. In my opinion, this film can be called one of the best zombie Movies ever made. The first film catches a certain atmosphere of mystery and mystery. Until the last moment it is not known who Alice is, why she does not remember anything, what kind of special forces and what kind of laboratory under the house. The plot here is not as important as the acting, since the first film went far from the first part of the game and except for Matt, there are no other characters that are in the game.
The action in the film is also enough. There are shootings with zombies, acrobatic jumps, fist fights with zombies and a battle at the end with some unknown creature. Zombies are slow, bloodthirsty and can only be killed with an accurate shot in the head. As in the game, there are zombie Dobermans.
The first and second films are the best in the series. You can see that Paul was trying to tell the story in a new way, and so far he has succeeded, although not perfectly. And yet the film in its genre is as cult as the first part of the game. After this movie, Paul and Mila got married.

A huge underground laboratory full of staff. Everything goes as it goes, but suddenly... Security systems detect a dangerous virus leak, all entrances and exits are blocked, and personnel are eliminated - the lesser evil principle - to kill hundreds to save millions. The iron logic of artificial intelligence is sometimes difficult for people to understand.
Shower room in the mansion. A young woman wakes up and realizes that she does not remember who she is or what is going on around her. There's a note on the table and a red cocktail dress on the bed. Was she going to some party? Or maybe... The second is confirmed by a sudden burst of special forces, who appeared in order to figure out what was happening in the laboratory, and at the same time took Alice and Matt, who introduced himself as a police officer.
Such is the well-known plot of this horror-fighter. Then there will be only the unknown, a few mistakes of special forces – and a crowd of hungry zombies, hungry for human flesh. The living no longer care what happened or who is responsible for all the problems – the main thing at stake is to survive and get out of this hellish place. If they are allowed to do this – not only that the Red Queen in the form of a sweet girl refuses to help at first – and then continues to build tricks – so even in his own ranks is the one who is ready for the sake of interest in the deal to destroy everyone – just to get out and get his own jackpot.
Paul Anderson, who had directed Mortal Kombat a few years earlier, took up staging the game again - and I must say, it turned out to be five-plus. Limited space, with nowhere to run and all the exits seemed to be blocked - and at each turn can only expect death in the form of another raised corpse - isn't that why we love this film and watch it from time to time?
The actors didn’t get the job either.
Mila Jovovich perfectly proved to us, the audience, and the crew that she can fight – so the director could not resist her charm. Her Alice isn’t a murder machine yet, she’s a man who doesn’t know who she is—and the memories are even more confusing—so is she from Umbrella—or isn’t she? And what's her connection to that nightmare that happened in the lab? It turns out that the most is not straight.
Michelle Rodriguez in the usual role of a boy-baba. Ready to die in order for others to survive – and repeating her own words – the directors simply don’t know what to do with her, so she rarely makes it to the final. When everything seemed to be over and the train at all times rushes to the exit - the antidote does not help. I don't know about you, but I felt sorry for her.
And all the other actors, some appeared only to die quickly, and some made them worry about their fate. Although Spence did not regret anything - for what he fought - he ran into it.
Of course, you can make games movies. But, for some reason, history does not yet remember good samples, looking at which one wants to say: “This is it.” The adaptation of Lara Croft turned out to be cheap with a complete lack of plot. Max Payne received the most negative reviews of critics that could be. Hitman was received a little better. Silent Hill seems to have been praised, but if you do not play, rush to watch a movie (as your submissive did), then everything that happens will seem like the ravings of a mad man beating his head against the felt wall of Kashchenko. Relatively good "Superbrothers Mario", but they are so inexpressibly far from their games-donors that the film adaptation it pulls weakly.
No exception was the “Abode of Evil”. It is the first part of it, because all other fairy tales about undead walking on motives. Let the second part and came out more successful than the first, and the subsequent persistently sought to achieve the complete ideotism of logic and absurdity of actions – it makes sense to consider only the first part, since it is the Alpha and Omega, the film adaptation of the game and so on.
So imagine. A corporation decides to set up a laboratory to grow mice with human ears on their backs and pandemic viruses. Where's the best place to do that? In the middle of a secret polygon somewhere in the sun-ridden desert, into which even a virus that broke free can not infect anyone at all will? Well, no, why? Let's place it in a densely populated area where everyone can freely enter and leave. Next, the device of the bunker itself is amazing. There is only one way out of it, and it is located in an unremarkable country house in gardening on the outskirts of the city of Khorkovsk. And the creators of this house do not see any palev in the fact that next to it will be parked fifteen thousand cars, and through the door will come in and out every five minutes new people. But the creators of the bunker was smart enough to write a computer girl who, in case of a slight cold at the cleaner, is ready to flood the whole almshouse with healing sewer water.
The idea of a virus breaking out is as old as the world. Half of zombie movies begin with the fatal mistake of some crooked lab technician. The only merit of the "Abode" is the renewal of the genre. Stupid ghouls from "Night of the Living Dead" got a new image. At the same time, the trendy anti-corporate direction also did its job. Pipple has started drinking again.
Playing faceless actors. The dialogue is simple and reduced to the level of binary code. Milla Jovovich? Well, there is. When she screams, when she doesn't scream. That's all, actually. To be fair, it’s worth noting that more is not required in this kind of film.
The film is banal and original at the same time. The Red Queen is the same HALL9000. Dead and released viruses were a hundred times before and after. The mural can be mentally replaced with the scenery for “Alien”. In general, this is a whole bouquet of various borrowings, or simply plagiarism. Watching the movie does not interfere, but the residue remains. In addition, the picture lacks style, constant crawling through the sewer (pardom, bunker) the appearance of which does not contribute at all. The only thing that the creators did well was the soundtrack. Recognisable and simple.
The first time I saw Resident Evil was when I was, if I remember correctly, 13 years old. The film was late at night on television and immediately made a lasting impression on me, and considering that at the time I was still a completely inexperienced viewer, I liked the film even more, as it seemed at the time quite creepy and tense. Seeing it for the first time (and for the second and third time) I had no idea that the film was based on the computer game Resident Evil, moreover, I had not heard about such a game at the time. So I’m making it clear in advance that I didn’t have a bit of bias when I first saw this film, but because of the memories, the score may be a little overstated.
Even now, 11 years after the release of the film, the plot does not seem trivial, despite its simplicity. Of the whole plot, I only remembered three things that seemed strange and that I didn’t really like. But, if you try to look impartially, then this story is not so cool. Therefore, it is a solid 8.
I liked the actors and their performances in Residence, although in a couple of emotional episodes some of them seemed too “static”. However, the emotions and intonations played well and I really believed them. I do not recommend watching this film in dubbing, if you do not like subtitles, then it is better to get a film with the translation and voiceover of Dmitry “Goblin” Puchkov. If you watch the film with her, you can hear the intonations of the actors, but, nevertheless, the voices do not merge and everything sounds quite decent and clear. Total 8 (after viewing with subtitles).
For 2002, the visual series is very good. The fighting scenes are quite beautifully staged and the persecution of the infected on the first viewing seems quite creepy. The camera shows what the viewer needs to see. Computer graphics are good, although not perfect, it would not be superfluous to allocate her timekeeping a little less than there is in the film, but still she is a little striking. I understand that “disappearing corpses in the hallway” can be a reference to a game where corpses disappear when you go into another room (as various sources say (although this sounds a bit like an excuse)), but why, when a person is eaten (whoever does it), only cuts remain on the victim (they wanted to eat it!). Especially towards the end of the film, the lack of dismemberment looks a little strange. As a result, I put 8.5 for the picture (9 would be a lot, and 8 vice versa is not enough).
The music in the film is a separate conversation. The main theme of the film is simply masterpiece! No wonder she's so popular. The rest of the music is also good, but apart from the above composition, only Marilyn Manson and Slipknot come to mind, which are directly related to the soundtrack. In general, the other melodies are also quite good, but for some reason they do not remember me (while I wrote, I remembered several passages). In general, decent music for the film, contributing to a better atmosphere. 8 points.
And atmospheric in the film looks impressive. You immerse yourself in the film, sometimes even during the next viewing it becomes a little creepy and emotions appear. Everything is selected quite well, you feel the fullness of the created mood and thus the film becomes more interesting to watch. But there are always some shortcomings, and now I am not so “attracted” by Resident Evil, despite the fact that I still like it very much. The result is 9 points.

(rounded)
P.S. The film should appeal to gamers (who have not seen it yet), who do not shy away from the sight of blood; fans of R-type fighters; as well as fans of any living dead.
Hollywood from the mid-90s took a gradual course on the development of popular computer games in order to win a new audience among the gaming environment. The first successful adaptation of the cult game was “Deathly Battle” in 1995, filmed by a little-known then English director Paul Anderson and in 2002 the same Anderson took up the transfer to the cinematic format of an even more iconic computer toy – “Resident Evil”. Initially assigned to the project George Romero because of creative differences dropped out of it, however, as it soon became clear, Paul Anderson did not hit his face in the dirt, shooting a truly high-quality and dynamic fantastic action movie, successfully dressed in the armor of a classic zombie horror with a decent age rating.
The plot of the tape, of course, does not reveal anything supernova and it is very traditional: a secret laboratory, a power-hungry megacorporation with the symbolic name “Umbrella”, a dangerous virus and hordes of zombies derived from it. However, Paul Anderson, who spoke in the project and as a screenwriter, dressed this traditional plot for the genre in a powerful dynamic drawing, when you watch the action with bated breath and until the finale you do not even know about the development of the storyline. Anderson controls his characters like a joystick, leading them purely within the genre, but not forgetting about the drawing of characters, so there are no completely positive characters in the film.
In “Resident Evil” 2002, Alice has not yet become the most paramount character, although it is on her that the whole intrigue of the tape rests. The play of Milla Jovovich is impeccable and the character performed by her turned out to be whole and charismatic. Also good in the background of the film Michelle Rodriguez, James Purfoy and Eric Mebias.
The cameraman David Johnson shot the film in a gloomy and stylish manner, creating a catchy and eerie atmosphere in the tape. Visually, it is impossible to find fault with the film, because the action is presented to the viewer in a spectacular manner, and the main reason for the nightmare - zombies - look as they should, that is, repulsive and bloodthirsty.
A special rhythm to the picture gave the soundtrack, written by Marco Beltrami and Marilyn Manson and perfectly woven into the structure of the tape.
So, Resident Evil is a high-quality and interesting adaptation of the cult computer game, which I recommend to all fans of horror films, especially their zombie direction, and fantastic action films.
Since the film (and its sequels) is not an adaptation, but is based on the Resident Evil series of games, it makes no sense to draw parallels in the plot and point out any errors in the adaptation. After all, everyone knows that the inscription “based on motives” often means that the film will show anything and anyone (exceptions: the images of the main characters and the main facts of the plot). But this adaptation has been relatively good. The plot quite keeps the bar of the original, without any original features and unexpected turns (although the moment of pseudo-intrigue in the film is present and is not in the least superfluous), but there are no outright logical blunders in it. Some moments, however, leave a couple of questions hanging in the air. The film is also full of various horror clichés (from the division of the squad to a light romantic branch). I am glad that the image of Umbrella was able to convey perfectly.
Heroes and Actors
Each character has his own face and retains it throughout the picture, except for the leader (Shane) and the medic of the squad. These faces are of course blurred, observing, so to speak, the traditions of the genre. But even here there is someone to empathize with and there is someone to hate. Alice looks a lot like Ada Wong. Similarity is only external and in the plot it still does not occupy its niche. Alice acts as an alternate protagonist, but despite this, she fits well into the universe.
From the acting can be noted a good game of Eric Mabias (Matt) and James Purfoy (Spens). Naturally, both Mila (Alice) and Michelle Rodriguez (Raine) were good. The latter, it would seem, surpassed everyone in the image, but the number of films watched with her makes you think that Rodriguez behaves this way in life, so she does not have to play at all, so her acting data is controversial.
Audio, video and other effects.
To sound and music claims zero – everything is done perfectly.
Visual effects at a high level of quality. Scheme "Anthroat", scenery (especially the mansion itself, even if it takes 10 minutes in the film), and about the corridor in the chambers of the Red Queen and say nothing. The only thing that makes me feel a little bit like the last one. Liquor came out visually not bad, but still something is wrong with him. And his mutation is a completely unnecessary undertaking.
The makeup is just terrible, zombies are more like drunken drunks than the ones who rose from the dead. I understand 2002 and all that. But for that year, the limits of possibilities went far beyond the pale bodies and circles under the eyes. By the way, I’m curious... if the plot of all flooded to fight the virus, then where are the wounds such as the absence of almost half of the face, twisted leg? And why, if the virus seems to shut down under water, why would the corpse move underwater and open its eyes? About smeared with mud dogs in general should be silent. Plus, it just kills a tiny amount of blood in the movie, compared to how much it should have been.
Terrible editing and cutting. Sometimes it is quite unclear how some members of the squad get to one place, to another, how they separate and how they get together again. It seems that a quarter of the film was cut, choosing randomly different segments, which clearly did not benefit the film.
The picture, in general. Results
Despite all the disgust I felt as a fan of the universe about the film, watching it was not as unpleasant. As a separate film – a quite worthwhile creation with great music and a good atmosphere. Unfortunately, there is a lack of dynamics, action. A budget of $33 million, of course, casts doubt on whether the money went where it needed to go. I advise you to check it out.
The film Resident Evil is an adaptation of the RE series of games, which is no secret to anyone. But there's a lot of debate about how to think of it as an adaptation of games, or as a separate movie. Let's try to figure it out.
Of course, the first thing RE fans turned against Alice. And if it's a film adaptation, what did she forget? Who are all these people in scary costumes? Another case of zombies, lyzoons and Cerberus, turned out to be quite plausible and were able to cause at least some feelings. The atmosphere was good. Of the entire franchise, it was this film that was the most intense. Despite the fact that we already knew that we were deceived with the characters, we worried about them.
It is noteworthy that Romero, who was originally supposed to be the director of the film, wrote a script in which all the characters of the first game were to be involved. In addition, he wanted to show real human relationships, that is, to reveal the game from this angle. But why didn’t Capcom like it and fired him? As a result, the position went to the young Paul Anderson, who decided to radically change the script. And all would be fine if it was limited to one picture or the series continued to shoot in the same style. But the director's post was changed in the second and third parts. The result is confusion, confusion and thrash, not at its best.
As for the characters, if we consider the picture separately from the game, there is nothing significantly wrong with this. Alice took root perfectly and looked good in the performance of her beloved Milla Jovovich. And her image is a classic. Undoubtedly, the girl in a silk red dress combined with rough boots and weapons looks spectacular and memorable. And Rayne performed by Michelle Rodriguez perfectly fit into the atmosphere and even managed to fall in love and cause our experience. In general, women's images were especially successful, in particular the Red Queen. Beautiful villain, caused a lot of emotions.
In general, the charisma of the film is built by some small things, such as Alice’s close-up eye, her dress, a deadly laser beam, a zombie with a broken leg, dragging some instrument. That is, most people have such associations with this movie. And music written by Marilyn Manson. Without it, the atmosphere would not feel so bright.
In short, it’s a film set in the Resident Evil universe, but with different characters and a slightly different situation. And that’s what the film deserves to see and feel. The sequels are a separate story. But the first film still tried, in the end we have what we have – a kind of underscreening.
The movie was average. Against the background of new, exciting films, it looks damp and boring. But to call a movie a bad language doesn't turn. From the beginning we were fed riddles and mysteries, and at the end they were discovered. It was something.
Let me tell you more:
Pros:
1) The creators treated the characters mercilessly, killing them in the middle, but their characters are revealed very well that you do not even believe that they died. This is rare in movies, especially in America.
2) There was tension throughout the film. You're scared for every hero. Atmosphere + soundtrack + acting and plus zombie makeup (although the latter is slightly weak). But with the soundtrack came too much, they put their tense masterpieces where necessary and where not necessary. The frank laziness of the creators did not find time to search for special moments, at which flashy music would be heard just in moderation. The acting is not bad, but only Michelle Rodriguez, Mila Jovovich and other actors played without much desire. There was a feeling that they meet with zombies every day, they had a very quick reaction, and on a psychological level, the person would be shocked for an hour, although, who knows, maybe a bad scenario.
(3) The film is very cruel and merciless. What is the scene when the protection system turned on and the laser cut someone out?
In my opinion, all the pluses.
Cons:
1) Zombie. They will die, and they will die for an hour. And some of the main ones looked strange. They acted very cunningly, even though their brains turned off.
(2) Graphics and special effects. If I didn't know it was the Residence of Evil, I'd think it was an empty cheapie. The movements of the same monster are unrealistic, make-up patches were visible (from some zombies the edges protruded, although they did not have blood, plus the powder effect on the face of the creatures, and it is also clearly visible that the dogs do not have the slightest hint of a bite, a glued red object depicting blood.
(3) Cold characters. Soulless heroes. No one but Alice has spared their dead friends and colleagues.
Verdict: A soulless but punching picture for the evening. Although the movie is very good.
You watch the movie at the beginning and you think, yes, this could happen in the future. At a minimum, the current economic model allows for the possibility of such a scenario. But then, fiction gives way to virgin fantasy. Horror, action, constant timelessness - all this is and together with good directing and acting makes this picture interesting to watch.
There is no drama, love, friendship or complicated relationships. The film is dynamic, fleeting and leaves no chance for rewinding. Every second something happens, every minute the situation changes. We constantly learn new details, and intrigue becomes an integral part of what is happening. Down to the final credits.
Otherwise, it reeks of naive childhood – a time when we were scared of something if we did not want to obey. But for fans of the genre "fantasy" is the same. As for the "terrible" side of the picture - some moments instead of goosebumps made me smile.
