Let me start with a small story, it began in the 90s. Then, as a young gamer, I fell in love with a game called Resident Evil. I became a fan of the series of these games, and no doubt I will say that I passed all the games in the series that came out on PS One and PC .
In 2002, the film was released under the creepy title Resident Evil, and since I did not yet have any knowledge of the English language, I didn’t realize that this was an adaptation of one of my favorite games. I loved these two projects in isolation, not assigning them to the same universe.
Recently, reviewing the last existing part of the series, I decided to shake off the dust from the first part and alternately revise them all, as well as, as I am able to write reviews on them.
Here we go.
"You're all going to die down here."
Resident Evil was a project that gave a shift in the creative component to some personalities at once, namely: the director Paul W. S. Anderson, who in the future will sink the series under his delirious directorial vision for the series; Milla Jovovich - marries our director and begins to play a super-heroine, and quite mediocrely; and of course, Michelle Rodriguez, which sets the second plan Resident Evil belongs to the category of movies Zombie Movie, i.e. in which there are many beloved zombies! Films of this category are not few, but worthy units, I can cite as an example a couple of excellent projects: Dawn of the Dead (I am not afraid of the word - the best film about the zombie apocalypse), Report(Do not confuse with the American version called Quarantine), the series The Walking Dead, as well as two comedy projects - Zombie and Zombie named Sean. A self-respecting zombie lover is bound to watch these movies (I know you already have, dear friend). So, the Resident Evil (the first part of the series), in my opinion, is also one of the best representatives of the genre.
Breakdown into categories:
1). Acting game:
It makes no sense to describe how worthy the acting game is, it is moderately good here. They recruited a couple of not-so-famous actors, plus a few more actors gaining popularity (Colin, Milla and Michelle). I have not seen any actors fail-s, so you can put "+".
2). Plot:
The authors approached the source, at least with caution. As a fan of the series and as an expert in the Resident Evil lineup, I can say that the authors did not introduce anything into the script that would disturb the universe. There is the same company Umbrella, the city of Racoon city and new, hitherto unknown heroes. I will not describe the details, only I will say that it is very interesting to follow the script, the atmosphere of the film fascinates and absorbs the viewer. After viewing, the question arises whether such laboratories exist deep underground, beneath our cities. The end of the film only strengthens the desire to expect the next film of the series with even greater zeal.
3). Soundtrack:
It's gorgeous. For the whole list of themes speaks one, which will be the song on which immediately begin to recognize the film — Marliyn Manson — Resident evil .
Result:
Resident Evil - Zombie movie, which has a good cast, a great soundtrack and a decent plot. Fans of zombies and Milla Jovovich - a must-see!

Movies about zombies appeared a long time ago. Many paintings presented their own version of events about how the dead began to walk among the living. But among all, perhaps the most famous is the tape “Resident Evil”. In 1996, a game of the same name was released. At the time, there was no game scarier - scary zombies, a dark mansion filled with secrets, a certain Umbrella Corporation - all this caused horror. Over time, the series began to gain popularity. But the directors didn't sleep either - why not bring the story of the game to the big screens? In 2002, the film Resident Evil appeared. Many players were afraid that with the adaptation of their favorite game can do a terrible thing. But I can say with confidence that this tape will appeal to all players and just people who love movies about zombies.
The main character wakes up in her soul, but she does not remember her name, who she is and how she got here. After leaving the shower, she begins to explore a huge and at the same time empty mansion. A little later, she goes into the main corridor, and out of nowhere, armed men appear. They take her and walk through the secret doors. It turns out that there is a world organization Umbrella, which makes weapons and conducts secret experiments. The fact is that the mansion, in which the heroine named Alice was found, serves as a cover for the Umbrella underground laboratory. And there was a recent accident. No response was received when trying to contact the staff. So the corporation sends a special team there to investigate the labs and understand why the connection was lost. But descending into the secret laboratories, the whole group is not waiting for answers, but real horror, since the dead began to come to life and are driven by only one basic instinct - food.
The story really captivates and keeps in suspense until the very end. I want to know what happened, who is to blame and how it will end. There are unexpected plot twists and therefore it is very difficult to predict everything in advance. That’s why Resident Evil will be able to hold you to the final credits.
The main advantage of the film is the atmosphere. It is dark, scary and exciting – here in the foreground is not the dynamism, as in the subsequent parts, and the atmosphere of horror. When characters walk through dark corridors, constantly hearing only some creaks and sounds, all this causes goosebumps. And then the most interesting thing begins - zombies appear. Heroes are constantly running away, getting into dangerous situations, taking the fight - all this looks very exciting. And just scary moments full – someone pops out suddenly, the sound will be some terrible. Also full of memorable moments - for example, a room with lasers you will remember for a long time.
This is the main feature of the film – it is diverse, gloomy and scary. That’s what a movie about the living dead needs. And fans of the original game will be satisfied - the atmosphere is perfectly conveyed, although there are some changes in the plot, characters and places.
High-level acting. All characters are memorable, each has its own character, and some of them are very mysterious. Throughout the film, you are worried about them. Of course, it is worth noting Milla Jovovich, who perfectly played her role. And everything that happens supports a dark, oppressive musical accompaniment, which gives the film the right way.
Resident Evil is a first-class zombie horror movie that has a great story, exciting and scary atmosphere and good acting. All lovers of horror should definitely get acquainted with this picture, and all fans of the game too, as here the source was treated with care and respect.
What would happen if the film adaptation of the famous game “Resident evil” was taken by venerable director George Romero, who at one time shot a whole epic “Night of the Living Dead”? Most likely, it would be a film of formless horror, bloody, with classic zombies - slow, barely shaking. I don’t know how Romero would use the visuals in the film, or how they would be minimized. Who would be the main character of the film, not Jill Valentine as in the first part of the game? Would the film be based entirely on the script of the game or would it be a free interpretation of the plot? Would it be better than a Paul W.S. Anderson movie? I don't know.
The producers did not like the work of the Romero team and they gave the green light to Paul W. S. Anderson, who in the mid-90s quite successfully filmed the Sega legend Mortal Combat. Anderson decided not to follow in the footsteps of the writers of the original game and not to drive a squad of elite special forces into the dungeon under a huge mansion filled with all sorts of poisonous plants, mutant animals and zombies. By and large, of all the variety of negative characters, only zombies remained. But the director created a whole collection of his own characters - Alice (an analogy of Alice from a famous fairy tale), Rain O'Campo, Matt, Kaplan. It so happened that Alice could not be Alice at all, but Ada Wong, only Milla Jovovich does not pull on a Chinese woman, so Alice appeared. But then why didn't Jovovich play Jill Valentine? Here's the mystery.
So a squad of special forces enters the underground scientific center "Hive", where something terrible happened. On the way, they pick up a couple of main characters. And all of them are trapped, as the “hive” is teeming with zombies – dead employees of the center.
By the way, many probably noticed that Anderson, in addition to shooting a film based on the game, also managed to draw analogies with “Alice from the Looking Glass”. Hence the "Red Queen", a mirrored room and experimental rabbits.
And yet I think, despite the discontent of computer game fans, the film was a success. It was successful as an original project. In some places he is terrible, there is a tense atmosphere, and the heroes really cling to, worry about them, and some want to nail with their own hands. Even Milla Jovovich played surprisingly well here: all these experiences, indifference to other people, and at the right moments the actress showed courage and courage, skillfully transforming her character from an ordinary and at first glance fragile girl into a fearless soldier. Michelle Rodriguez kept her signature style, playing a tough assassin mercenary.
The protagonists here have to face not only crowds of frisky zombies, but also the danger of artificial intelligence “Hive” – “Red Queen”, which is usually the heroes in the form of a hologram of a little girl. As in the “Terminator” we are trying to drill, and whether to trust computers. Yes, they solve many tasks for us, they do a great job for us. What if they were given responsibility for people’s lives? The Red Queen was essentially doing the right thing, trying to keep the virus from leaving the station. But people, as usual, ruin everything. Curiosity and greed, as always, take up.
We got a stylish, creepy horror from Paul S. Anderson, to the level of which, years later, all four sequels will not reach.
To begin with, about six months ago, I did the first three parts of Resident Evil. After 6 months, I remembered that there were four films with the same title. And I decided to review them all...
I started naturally with the first film, so let’s get started.
Plot:
I still can’t believe that Paul Anderson directed this #39 masterpiece, which in 1995 gave the world the magnificent Battle of Death & #39, which to this day is the best adaptation of a computer game of all time. Unfortunately, the second time was a hundred times worse.
The main character of the film is a certain Alice, who was not in the games. By the way, I haven’t seen a single character in the entire movie that has anything to do with the Resident Evil universe. It refers only 'Umbrella' and 'Raccoon City'.Everything! The film itself is rather boring and develops very slowly, to call this film horror language does not turn, because for the whole film there is not a single scary moment. I heard that before the movie Paul Anderson made all the actors pass the game, but why it was necessary for me is still a mystery.
I am glad that throughout the film there are pleasant references for fans. The main character's eye at the end of the film, the final scene with the train is almost identical to the final scene from Resident Evil 2 and other small Easter eggs. Unfortunately, this is not a film that can be made.
Actors:
I haven’t seen any great game, although it’s not usually in movies like this. Everyone has done their best here.
Result:
As the film adaptation of the game, the film failed, the complete absence of the plot and key characters did not go to the benefit of the film, so it turned out only based on the series.
As a standalone film, the film was also not very successful. It turned out a weak middle peasant with inexpressive special effects and a weak script.
As a result, we get: 3 points for Easter eggs and all kinds of references, 1 point for good zombies and dogs, 1 point for a room with a laser grid, which will later appear in Resident Evil 4.

Despite all this, the film collected a decent box office, as a result of which Resident Evil 2: Appocalypse appeared. .
Yes, Paul Andersen really likes to shoot horror films based on video games. He created Mortal Kombat. Whatever it is, and Mortal really became a cult, in our country in the 90s - early 2000s, many teenagers and just young people played Mortal Kombat on construction sites and other wild places, depicting heroes from the film and the game. But that's not what I mean. I now want to talk about another equally iconic thing from Andersen – Resident Evil and how I learned about this franchise.
It was December 2002 in the courtyard. I just cornily went to my neighbor to ask for a few videotapes to watch, as I did not really want to walk on this cloudy evening at all. And then the neighbor's kid says to me:" I played in the Resident Evil club yesterday, it’s a great game, there’s also a film adaptation of it, you won’t believe me. And pulls out a cassette in a plastic cover with a design just like your site, with Milla and Rodriguez on a red background. At first, I did not understand anything, since in those years I was still a “non-computer” person (and the fact that I used to play Top Gun in Dandy and saw Windu a couple of times does not count), and he was in full swing at computer games in clubs. Well, I took the tape, although I doubted that the film was worth it.
From words and memories to action. Turning on the film, I immediately realized that I was wrong about the poor quality. At first, of course, nothing like that: an empty mansion with yellow lights and fallen leaves and Milla Jovovich in all its glory in a strange reddish dress in the bathroom. But then special forces break in and find two more - Spencer and police officer Matt. And that's where the main action begins. I can say that the very entry into the Ant was really striking, especially at the time when the special forces began to pass through to the Red Queen. I remember the first time I saw this scene with lasers coming from the walls of the corridor, and also how lasers dealt with everyone who entered this corridor. But the most important part, of course, is zombies. There are 3 types of them: zombie dogs, zombie people and experimental zombies, which, of course, delivered especially when watching.
Paul Andersen masterfully used visual effects in this film. What's the cost of shooting Alice with zombie dogs? I can tell you that the scene looks in one breath. Zombie people were particularly impressed, in particular, a man with an axe who moved, scraping them on the floor. There are a lot of scenes in the film, which gives goosebumps, especially the scene with the elevator, when a fighter entered there, and there are zombies infested, looks very impressive. I’m not talking about the experimental prototype, which delivered to everyone by the end of the film, and the scene on the train in general is the apogee of the film.
About the actors I can say that the brightest is of course Milla Jovovich, who played Alice. Although it is a little dim compared to the same “Fifth Element” by Luc Besson, but for that and a horror film, here bright colors are not very necessary. Its speeches are more like templates, but you can watch it. The second brightest is Michelle Rodriguez, who played a special fighter named Rain. Of course, Michelle conveyed the role of a woman with a male character, who does not get along with the people around her. Of course, when she turned into a zombie in the film, I felt a little uncomfortable.
As for the male component, I can say that the actors are not bright, at least I have not seen them anywhere, this is for sure in the main roles. But the guys still conveyed the atmosphere as much as they could. Especially when I talk to the Red Queen, I can say that I did not disappoint.
Of course, I can say that the film is not the best of Andersen’s collection, it has a much memetic and epic Mortal Kombat, as well as other films, but Resident Evil is rightfully considered one of the best adaptations of computer games. After all, before watching this movie, I did not know anything about the game of the same name. But then I got to know her. But that's another story altogether.
I can say that this film gave rise to a quite recognizable and well-established franchise, which was talked about a lot in the 2000s, especially since Milla Jovovich has reached a completely new level, and we can say that the series of films “Resident evil” became a cult in the 2000s.
So I'll put it this way.
9 out of 10
After all, the story became a franchise, and this may not be every film.
I just want to note that I did not play the game, but I have heard about it, so fans of video games, do not be offended if something goes wrong in my review. And so, I saw this film a long time ago, and the film itself is not new, I watched several times, I decided to see more, I also saw sequels, but I will write about sequels in other reviews, and for now the first part. What can be said about the plot of this picture, the plot is presented in such a way that the viewer who did not play the Resident Evil game may not understand the essence of what is happening at first, and the person who played and loved the game will naturally be interested in watching the film, since there are many familiar things, this is a mansion, and the topic of viruses, in general all references. I honestly, at first did not understand anything, everything is somehow vague and incomprehensible, and then I realized that this is a film all the same with a normal clear plot, and the idea is that this virus is to blame for everything, or rather so the company that released it. “Umbrella” is the culprit in everything, this is a secret laboratory in which all the actions of the film took place, a dark and mysterious laboratory in which various creatures began, and it is mostly zombies.
The cast is filled with little-known personalities, well, only two main characters have celebrity status, this is the main character Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez who plays a secondary role. They played in my opinion simply, there is nothing genius in their game, this is not the film. What can be said about the horror component, I was not afraid, but I would like to feel some fear, and the presence of fear was not, maybe it seems to someone that some moments are scary, well, this is a spectator, someone is afraid, someone is not. Musical accompaniment sounded only in certain moments, in action scenes, but it is dynamic and adds entertainment. Director Paul Anderson managed to shoot a good and dynamic zombie - a horror based on a computer game.
"Resident Evil" - a good horror, in which the main role is played by Milla Jovovich, not her best role, but still interesting. I advise you to watch, do not waste time.
The T-virus was an important discovery, although it is clear that it can be successfully used for military purposes and profit. Even after death, the human body remains active. Hair and nails continue to grow, new cells appear, a small electrical charge remains in the brain, which dissolves for several months. T-virus provides a powerful impulse to cell growth and electrical charges, simply speaking, the virus animates the body.
"Resident Evil" - since I am a big fan of movies in which zombies like to walk, I can clearly say that this is one of the best films about these nasty, smelly, and rotten creatures. Director, screenwriter, co-producer of the film, a certain Paul W. S. Anderson. I think that this movie is another strong and very productive impetus in the career of Ukrainian-Russian actress Milla Jovovich, which I hate. It is clear that I have strong arguments on which I built myself, all this relationship with this star. I don’t respect actors for whom almost everyone does stunt doubles and stuntmen. If you don’t have physical data, acrobatic skills and minimal concepts about martial arts, you can’t go to a movie where all these skills are present in every scene. Remember the film “Ultraviolet”, with the same Milla in the lead roles, her understudy could be seen in almost every combat scene. On the fifth element of the claim is not, there Milla was on top, although there were doubts. Back to where I started this whole conversation. “1997 – The Fifth Element” – it was an explosion in Jovovich’s career, 1999 – “Joanna D’Arc” continuation of this explosion, and in principle, everything went further than invisible pictures of unknown directors.
Rain Ocampo: This shitty creature interrupted my unit.
Alice: This bastard seems to know how to get out of here.
And the film “Resident Evil”, one hundred percent was created with the goal at least as a trilogy, and Milla Jovovich realized that this film will not let Hollywood forget about her. Already on the way to the fifth film, in a word, parts can be as many as you like, and Milla will gladly agree to all the proposals, because this is her movie, and even more so the director of the monastery is her husband. Paul W. S. Anderson is the creator of the famous movie “Deathly Battle.” He made a very good fantastic action movie, from which it is difficult to distract or even take your eyes off. The world cinema is full of zombie movies, for some this topic has already eaten away, but I assure you that Resident Evil, staged on the game, you will be introduced to a completely new level of the film, where zombies run after people, and people from zombies, well, as usual, as always in principle. But here you will find a real cutting, the most that is not a real movie mince of rotten meat of the dead.
Rain Ocampo: I'll get out and I'll get one of you.
Matt Edison: All right, but first, we're going to wash ourselves.
Two other star actors take part in the film – Michelle Rodriguez and Eric Mabias. Michelle is one of those actresses that you really start to believe in, and you feel sorry for all the torment of this actress, this kind of movie, just for her. The plot tells about an anthill - a secret laboratory of the corporation Umbrella, all this secret institution is under the city, and of course, no one is dreaming about it. In this corporation, the irreparable happened, the T-virus, which was prepared for military purposes, broke out of the entire laboratory, which tightly sealed all the exits and entrances, so that it did not fall on the streets of the city. All the people working in the anthill turned into terrible and hungry zombies. The main character named Alice, remembering almost nothing, finds herself in an anthill, locked up, with a group of special forces and with a large company of living dead that the heroes, that zombies, are all rushing up to the exit. As I learned, all zombies were dancers, as Paul W. S. Anderson explained, they can hear their bodies. In my opinion, the zombies were brilliant, just magnificent. Summing up, awesome film, very interesting and exciting, individual applause for dancers playing zombies.
Always attracted films, the plot of which is associated with research in the field of genetics, virology. Lab, white coats, virus, danger. Danger. It's an insanely intense movie. A little protracted, as it may seem at first glance, the beginning, only incites curiosity. You get special pleasure from the gradually revealed plot, when the explanation does not come immediately, through scraps of memories of the heroes. In the beginning, there are no special effects expected directly from the go, but later it begins exactly what many thrill lovers call “action”. The first “Defender of Umbrella” struck coldness and clarity of action, as struck and thirst for life and “plastic for survival”.
And then began the living and moving, thirsting for sacrifice, the Resident of Evil, boiled and boiled with blood and the desire to escape. The struggle with inhumans, soulless beings with base instincts flared up, forcing them to squeeze their fists while watching and root for the “survivors” as if the fate of humanity depended on the outcome of the struggle (and, in fact, the film). The end inevitably washes away to immediately start watching the sequel.
For such a feeling of atmosphere, for incessant empathy and, of course, for Mila,
10 out of 10
After a recent viewing of a film accidentally caught on hand late at night on TV, it is simply impossible not to pay tribute to the entire game series and Paul Anderson himself, who can be safely praised for the adaptation of the most outstanding unit of the game horror industry.
The overall atmosphere of the film is extremely tense (albeit somewhat absurd in Hollywood). Dark, de-energized dungeons of secret laboratories, serious special forces with a serious mission and no less serious heroine Alice (Milla Jovovich) with no less serious head damage (and, as a result, amnesia) in a beautiful, tight red dress make their way among the sea of zombies.
Of course, in comparison with today’s level of drawing of avatar special effects, Andersov’s monsters look if not ridiculously cartoonish, but definitely some awkward. The level of special effects of the picture, as already mentioned, may have been incredibly high at that time, but today the fog and scarlet fog that arose under the feet of the heroes, a beautiful liquid that is even difficult to confuse with blood, as well as the thinly animated hologram of the Red Queen look frankly ridiculous. The endless stockpiles of special forces weapons and the sudden superpowers of Jovovich to jump beautifully on the walls can also be attributed here with a light hand.
Zombies in this film deserve a very special count. Isn't that a zombie movie? But something about these strange creatures, with a strange makeup in the form of white powder on their face, you can not recognize them. They move even very zombieically slowly and regurgitating some parts of the body, but still consider them dead, bloodthirsty creatures help almost only the reactions to them of the main characters. In some places, the directors did not even stingy to draw such long-awaited bloody spots and nightmare wounds to them, but these are isolated cases, and for the most part, the dead people inhabiting Uliy look as if he came off the parody adaptation of some “Scream”.
The main characters are the part that should have been paid tribute since the review, because it is they, and only they make us believe in what is happening on the screen, in what can be scary and lonely there, not only from Hollywood light effects and blood-stained walls, but also from the fact that this group of people is sent to rack up the problems of a good corporation deep underground, where everything is not as deserted and quiet as they believe.
Milla Jovovich is really good here. Even despite the ridiculous dress and ugly (according to the author of the review) thinness, she plays very well. In the emotions of her heroine (albeit template) believe and even feel compassion.
Every actor, even more or less lit up in the foreground (whether it’s a black employee of the Corporation, stuck in the elevator at first, or pretty Kaplan, who is very emotional and afraid so that reluctantly sick for him), bring to the film a special plausibility and beautiful, life game.
The overall script and soundtrack, alas, do not shine originality. If we talk about the first - this is an indicator of real Hollywood delusions, where the girl wakes up in an incomprehensible house, naked for some reason, puts on a beautiful dress and is subjected to a pathetic attack by special forces, informing her that she is a special agent and will go with them to a super-secret institution for the development of bioweapons. Then in the second case, all that the filmmakers did not stint is a couple of inserts of alternative music that stirs interest in the most action-packed moments of the film.
To beat the result, I want to bet 10 out of 10 for such a bold attempt to film a good game universe as Resident Evil and, in fact, only 6 out of 10 for its implementation. I would like to put a point for each actor exactly, but then it would not be the same.
Extremely surprised by the fact that the notorious Romero wanted to make a movie about zombies on our screens, and was terribly disappointed that something prevented him. I think it was his work that we would appreciate by a solid ten.
The secret experiment. Deadly virus. A fatal mistake.
"Resident Evil" is the movie I learned about almost before it hit the big screens. In the original game "Biohazard" or in the English version "Resident Evil" I did not play, but I perfectly imagine the discontent of the fans of the game in how the director "Deathly Battle" Paul W. S. Anderson, changed the plot in favor of a full-length film in order to turn the story into a more realistic and boring story, filming his favorite Milla Jovovich. I remember the moments of the picture, which I saw in the store, where the man was cut with a blue ray, then I fell into a state of shock, decided to necessarily watch the film completely. A fan of the computer game of the same name was not, but he felt excitement in the circle of familiar players who love to squirm a mouse with a clava, and shoot a couple of other zombies. Opinions were divided, but the atmosphere was dominated by positive emotions from the film. The picture of Paul Anderson has numerous elements of the game, including names, character names and so on, however, it turned out to be only based on the game, but more technological and large-scale, thereby very interesting, dynamic and moderately intimidating.
The main character of the film, contrary to the original game, is a fictional character Alice performed by Milla Jovovich, who regains consciousness after the action of a lulling gas, the side effect of which is temporary memory loss. Already at this point, the director beautifully turns the film, after his bloody prologue, into a detective, who begins to tell about Alice and the huge underground scientific laboratory “Hive”, the backup entrance to which is Alice’s mansion. The Hive is managed by Umbrella Corporation, which conducts research in the field of new technologies, nanobiology and even biological weapons. This multi-storey underground machine is located right under modern Raccoon City, and supports the electronic life of the station – a computer known as the Red Queen. Just then she cut off oxygen to all employees of the Corporation after getting their developed T-virus in the ventilation system. Now Alice and police officer Matt, along with a sudden appearance of an armed special unit, in which Michel Rodriguez, Colin Salmon and Martin Crews with the support of several more soldiers, go to the Hive to find answers about the situation.
Paul W. S. Anderson methodically opens the door by the door in front of the viewer, whipping up an atmosphere of closed fear of the cold laboratory and its new, inanimate inhabitants, people affected by the virus. The dead crawl out in search of flesh, almost invulnerable, overwhelming in number. Only a scratch or bite can make several of the main characters of the same dead, or they will be eaten alive, bathing in blood with juicy pieces of fresh meat. The virus affected not only employees, but also dogs, which are much more agile, faster and more aggressive, in addition to the most dangerous development of the corporation, a mutant known for the game as Licker (Lizun), a strong and bloodthirsty creature, escaped from secret containers. And the Queen watches all this, sometimes showing her naive baby face, playing with the living, being often the most dangerous opponent for the main characters. The Hive becomes a real abode of evil, a hotbed of a virus from which you can get out only by remembering who you worked at Umbrella, while bypassing the protection system, the walking dead and finding an antivirus. In a sense, the film is twisted no worse than the game itself, having a good plot, a similar beginning and end, dips into action and as a result is remembered for a long time.
Resident Evil is remembered for many factors, the first of which, I believe, is the atmosphere. Being one of the zombie horrors, the film shows the dead not classically, like the works of Romero, it is not just devilry, it is the result of a virus. I don’t argue, perhaps old zombie movies are scarier than the work of Paul W. S. Anderson, but here he achieved suspense and through the scene, combining dead and mutants with a modern underground laboratory, which allowed the picture to look more stylish. Helped the film to become for some time a hit and holiday in the circles of amateurs, music, successfully selected by Marilyn Manson and Marco Beltrami. The latter I do not really regret, but Manson pleased heavy guitar chords in the hard scenes of the film and the main theme that will always be liked. Weaknesses in the film also have, which can be attributed moments with too unworked graphics, in the eye catches, but they can be counted on the fingers. Acting also does not stand out, including Milla Jovovich, but the selection of actors is very successful, including the nondescript James Purfoy, and everyone knows Michel Rodriguez.
Resident Evil is an imperfect, but one of the most high-quality adaptations of computer games from the production of Samuel Hadida and the studios of David and Constantin Films. One of the most interesting works by Paul W. S. Anderson and the best part in the story content of the entire franchise.
For me, Resident Evil is a mix of computer themes, iron corridors, zombies, monsters and Milla Jovovich, along with Michelle Rodriguez, who I don’t like here. But it's personal.
Breaking into 2002, the film became a cult, because fans of the game of the same name + horror fans + who went to the movies on Milla + all adjoining = hellish mixture of people. In general, everything is filmed and done well, so there is no point in spraying - many have already been removed from the language by other reviewers. Everything I expected from watching has happened. The computer graphics were a bit bitter in some places, but for that time you can forgive. But I am glad that there are clear hints of a sequel that has already come true - I love this. This horror reminds me of the pilot series of the franchise in all respects, and it is the pilot that seems to be unfinished, not consisting of a separate story. Agree, after the session do not wait for the next parts at least surprisingly, to put it mildly. And the well-known, necessary for such tapes post-apocalyptic type of the destroyed city further adds intrigue ...
I will look at all the parts.
The Resident Evil series is one of the most popular games in the world. Therefore, her adaptation did not take long to wait. In 2002, the first part of the film franchise, which was headed by Paul W. S. Anderson, was released.
This director is not the first to make a film adaptation of the game. Prior to this film, he had already had experience working on Deathly Battle, but Resident Evil definitely did a lot better. This time Paul Andersen managed to make a great horror film with an admixture of an action movie. “Resident Evil” turned out to be a very good, dynamic and exciting picture. Watching this movie was really interesting, especially since it looked almost in one breath. The zombies in the picture were portrayed very well. I won’t say that they terrified me, as this happens rarely with me, but they looked pretty nasty zombies (no other suitable word just found).
Okay! “Resident Evil” is the story of how at one secret underground laboratory of the company “Umbrella”, which is called Anthravenik, an unexpected leak of a dangerous T-virus occurs. The computer that controls the entire lab shuts it down, killing all the employees. A trained team is sent to the scene, which is ordered to understand everything.
The main role in the film was played by Milla Jovovich. She played her character very well. Her character was very interesting, as her identity was revealed gradually, almost throughout the film.
Michelle Rodriguez also played not the last role in the film. As always, she got a war hero. As always, she was able to play her character very well.
Suddenly I liked the soundtrack written by Marco Beltrami and Marilyn Manson. The music perfectly suited this film, as it accurately maintained a gloomy atmosphere in it.
In the end, I will say that I really liked Resident Evil. This film turned out to be a great horror movie, which marked the beginning of a very good franchise in the Resident Evil series of games.
The screening of a computer game is a genre that rarely anyone managed to embody on screens. The fact is that the plot of computer games for their players can seem insanely interesting. However, it is worth considering that the plot in the game is very long and often too fantastic, which becomes an obstacle to creating an adapted script for the film. A person who is versed in such matters should have the highest mind and extensive erudition, so as not to disappoint the viewer. This was Paul W. S. Anderson.
Plot
Early twenty-first century. In the world in all spheres of society invaded a huge commercial structure - the company Umbrella. Meanwhile, a dangerous virus leaks in one of its huge underground laboratories, killing all staff. To find out the causes of the accident, a group of elite soldiers are sent to the laboratory. With them is a mysterious girl Ellis, who may be to blame for everything that happens.
Director
Resident Evil is therefore a good action movie, and the film too, because the director managed to combine several genres in it at once. First, the original genre of the film is, of course, an action movie. As an action movie, it is very dynamic and intense. The fight scenes made such a good impression that even I wanted to do it myself, despite their unrealistic nature. Secondly, there is a slice of a detective in the film, and a good detective. The heroes themselves do not investigate anything, but thanks to flashbacks, the viewer himself becomes a detective.
Game of actors
Overall, the acting was not bad. However, she did not make much impression. Mila Jovovich has not shown any bright abilities to prove that she is a good actress. Basically, she showed herself as a fighter, which is typical for her roles. With Michelle Rodriguez, the situation is the same: the game is not bad, but it is involved mainly in fight scenes.
Operation of the operator
I especially liked the style of filming. Due to the fact that the operator took care of the slow movement of the camera, which increased the voltage. I also liked the effect of magnifying the frame, not approaching the camera, but increasing the frame. He didn’t have anything to do with it, but it looked beautiful.
Soundtrack
The musical accompaniment corresponds to the plot of the film. The music combined heavy rock, which was ideal for scenes with fights and fights, as well as music with a medical style, which conveyed the atmosphere of the film and electronic. This mix created a climate of fear and doom.
Visual effects
The special effects in the film were weak, although in principle it is not surprising, since the budget of the film is not so huge. Most computer graphics were used in monster scenes or in a slow-motion bullet episode. Although the quality of the graphics, as mentioned earlier, was not ideal, the scenes looked spectacular.
Result
Resident Evil is one of the best films of 2002 and one of the few best adaptations of computer games. The film perfectly combines an intriguing plot, spectacular action and eerie, at the same time a beautiful atmosphere, which makes you want to watch the film again.

In the underground city of Umbrella Corporation called Anthrall, an accident occurs, in connection with which all workers die. To figure out what the corporation sends a group of people to open the Anthrall and disable the main computer, which controls the entire city.
This film is a remake of the game of the same name, and surprisingly the film was successful. The plot is as close as possible to the series of games, Alice as Milla Jovovich looks gorgeous, and the soundtrack generally requires special praise!
Paul Anderson has an arm full of games, but Resident Evil looks the best. Very high-quality cinema, and despite some pathosy scenes and dialogue, the film keeps in suspense until the very end.
It’s nice that the film can be interesting both for devoted fans of the game, which I consider myself, and just fans of zombie fiction and horror. Great start!
How do you make games movies? Review: And Milla Jovovich came...
Introduction: So historically it happened that today many movies on games (as well as vice versa) for many are a bad sign, a kind of standard of the main tastelessness in the world of cinema. In these series of reviews, I want to prove to everyone that this is actually not the case and that many of the games that are being scolded today can actually make any film of easy quality. But if anything, wish me luck!
Background: Not so long ago, there was a director called Paul Anderson. He lived, did not bother, but suddenly he wanted to do the kind of cinema that few people wanted to do before him, namely, game screening. He had already filmed the Battle of Death (which I will talk about later), but it was not enough for him. Then he decided to encroach on, as they say, sacred, namely, Japan, where he had to work with the adaptation of the iconic in the late 90s game series Resident Evil. After a great job, Paul had even more than he wanted to wish for, even Milla Jovovich somehow grasped, but this is a completely different story.
So, as it should break the review into parts and as a result, we draw a verdict – did Anderson turn out to be a great movie or is this, as many people think, the same empty as all films on games.
Plot. The plot has little in common with the game, and to be even more precise, practically negligible little in common, however, oddly enough, the film in this situation wins, so thank Anderson for deciding to go his own way, making it only better for his creation.
The plot tells about a girl in a red dress named Alice (Milla Jovovich). She wakes up in a large mansion, but how she got there she does not remember, however, like everything else – the girl has amnesia. If only she got off with this, so no - very soon she meets a certain police officer Matt (Eric Mabias), and the next second almost a whole squad of special forces breaks into the mansion, which includes James Shade (Colin Salmon), Rain (Michelle Rodriguez), Chad Kaplan (Martin Cruze) and several more fighters. In the following minutes of the film, everything began to resemble a game - only once in a bunker (the mansion turned out to be a kind of camouflage place, under which the tunnel into the bunker turned out to be) Alice and her “partners” are now trying to get out of such horror, which even the enemy is afraid to wish.
Simply put, we are waiting for a complete rethinking of the plot of the first part, but the same drive, and most importantly - horror, remained in place. I'll give you 9 points for that.
Acting and zoo-o-ombie. There are no real characters from the game, but they were replaced by more colorful characters played by more colorful people. The clear favorites here are definitely Michelle Rodriguez and Milla Jovovich. The men’s team played slightly worse, but mostly commendable, their emotions were especially well expressed.
Zombies turned out surprisingly scary and very realistic. I can’t even believe that it’s just people in makeup, and that the same zombie with a curved leg at the first meeting of GG with zombies is a dancer who knows how and not so much. Anyway, I'm ecstatic. Monsters design a little upset, but still they are nothing. 10 points.
Music. The theme from the original game is still there, and that’s good. Terrible notes running invisible claws from ear to neck and further down the back, you feel sinister and the understanding that something is wrong, something bad happened. 10 points, a theme for all time.
Ending. What to say... Unexpectedly, I would even say very. As it turned out, salvation from Hell does not mean a way out of it. The final, smooth long plan in the distance deserves at least special attention, as well as the recognition of the best ending of horror films.
The dead are coming. Let them go, we will give them 10 points for this.
Further influence on the history of the game series. As the series rolled into UG, the film literally revived her, as if giving a kick for rehabilitation. It is a pity that just over time the situation has turned in the opposite direction and a kick for rehabilitation was required for the film franchise Resident Evil. But that's another story altogether. 9 points.
Over. There will be no outcome. The introduction spoke for me. But I still, just in case, in public to inform — as long as there are such films, no one dares to claim that All films on games are bullshit!
In short: Alice nyah, Rain sexy, and zombies are charming.
Movie Games, Part 4: "Resident Evil" or "All the Mansions"
The first "Resident" (in Japan - Biohazard) was released in 1996, on the good old PlayStation. Combining the most interesting gameplay, cunning plot and absolutely monstrous control, the game received critical acclaim and gamers and, clear stump, gave a start to life several sequels, where experiments have already begun – so, “Resident Evil: Survivor” was a first-person shooter (among other things, he remembered the phrase in the final level “You have two minutes to evacuate, otherwise your shit will be smeared on the walls”, although given the monstrous level of translations into Russian of all games, I doubt whether this phrase was in the original PS). And starting with the fourth part, the series began to focus on action at all, leaving aside the puzzling claim of “connect 100,500 wires in the right order” and acquiring much more improved control.
The first cinematic "Resident" was released in 2002 under the direction of Paul W. S. Anderson - the director is good ("Mortal Kombat", "Through the Horizon", "Soldier") but not brilliant ("Alien vs Predator"). What could Paul offer sophisticated gamblers and spectators?
Paul W. S. Anderson's Fantasy World, that's it. A fan of the series, who knows why that blonde Albert Wesker in the first part can not be trusted, remembers all the stages of the mutation of William Birkin in the second part and with his eyes closed rolls a huge worm in the third, risks during viewing to get twenty heart attacks and a couple of brain tumors, because the game has catastrophically little in common.
So, during the Vietnam War, a special agent goes up the river to kill a mad dictator. Oh, that's from Apocalypse Now. There is not one special agent, but several, and they do not go up the river, but down to the Umbrella laboratory, and their opponent is not Ben Willard, but an avenger of zombies, monsters, etc.
From the point of view of the script, it is, frankly, murky. Anything that has nothing to do with action, switch. But only the slaughter begins - here it is worth praising Anderson - did not make sense, so took action. The fight with the zombie Rottweilers, the passage through the laser grid and the final battle with Lizun are worth forty minutes spent on the film (Forty - because everything that is not related to fights is better to rewind, remember?). This is served under a good soundtrack - the main theme of the authorship of Marilyn Manson I really liked, yes.
Regarding the caste of nagging there are no special. Jovovich is good, Rodriguez again seems like a woman, but at the same time seems like a man, the rest of the picture also did not spoil, well done.
As the film adaptation of the game “Abode...” is worth questioning, and the doubt is this. But as an independent action film deserves no less ...

Resident Evil was one of the first horror games, the action of the first part began in a mansion, ended in an underground laboratory. The game had a very heavy atmosphere, with such pressure to think was not easy. When passing, the player has to solve, not the easiest, tasks and methodically shoot, making terrible sounds, zombies.
The plot of the film “Resident Evil” is very far from the plot of the game. The picture, in fact, does not involve any character from the game, were taken only zombies, dogs and lyse from the second part. Paul Anderson has already proved to all gamers that he can film computer games. Anderson took a risk, he did not use any characters, invented the hive and the red queen, but this risk was justified, because he managed to convey the spirit of the game, and thanks to the anthill made the plot more twisted than in the game itself. Milla Jovovich played flawlessly, as Michelle Rodriguez always showed herself aggressively and audaciously, she of course plays tough heroines, James Purfoy did not look bad in the role of a cynical scumbag Spencer, Colin Salmon also pleased. All dialogues are carefully thought out, there is not a single silly phrase, the action is staged very stylishly.
Every time I started playing Resident Evil, I always had nightmares. As a result, Resident Evil 5 slept peacefully. No other horror game has affected me like this, not even the Silent Hill series, let alone BioShock or Dead Space. And only the movie “Resident Evil” made me remember these nightmares.
After watching all the main hits of George Romero, I realized Resident Evil is the best zombie movie.
At the end of the film, we see Milla Jovovich's character emerge from the Raccoon City hospital, she sees chaos, walks past broken police cars, buses, demolished electric poles, a newspaper with the headline THE DEAD WALK hangs nearby, she takes a shotgun from a police car and, slowly to the icy music, the defeated Raccoon City opens to us. This ending made us look forward to the continuation, but unfortunately two, deprived of reason, the subject, Alexander Witt and Russell Mulcay, thoroughly mocked gamers, and just over lovers of good movies, offering us to watch two cheap action films, under the titles of Resident Evil 2 Apocalypse and Resident Evil 3. The world film industry stamps such fighters ten pieces a month. And also Makoto Kamiya finished everyone with his animated picture, “Resident Evil Degeneration”. I laugh at them. I hope Anderson, in the fourth part of Resident Evil, at least lifts the corpse from the bottom and burys it with dignity.
I don’t give Resident Evil the highest rating because the film, after all, lacked a bit of scale, of course it’s a pity that directors like Paul Anderson are not given a lot of money, but give it to slackers like McGee or Sam Raimi.

Resident Evil is the best adaptation of a computer game.
Fantastic thriller “Resident Evil”, is not the first film based on a computer game, and certainly not the last. This picture was quite an expected adaptation, and when the shooting finally began, the people were really happy. The announcement of the launch of the project made many happy, however, for some reason almost no one even knew how radically the resulting film could differ from the expectations of fans of the series of games. But this does not yet prove that the picture turned out weak, on the contrary, everything is possible.
With the game, the film unites only a general storyline, nothing more. The fact is that Paul Anderson, who acted not only as a director, but also as a screenwriter of the film, kindly borrowed from the creators of the horror series exactly what he needed, the rest was carefully brushed aside. And the resulting void, in turn, the generalist filled with what he thought himself. This is how the scenario for the “Abodes of Evil” expected from the late nineties turned out.
And the writer came up with a lot of things. Starting with artificial intelligence, bearing the suspicious name “Red Queen”, and ending with a completely natural main character Alice, wearing a cool and probably very expensive evening dress. Apparently, Anderson thought that a blonde in a very short skirt, and even in an underground laboratory infested with zombies, would look much cooler than a group of police officers in an old mansion according to the game. But Paul thought right, and for this he needs to say thank you, instead of sprinkling complaints about the fact that the film is not similar to the game.
Partial originality of the script is not one advantage of the latter. Overall, the idea was really successful. The drive is so much that you never have time to relax for a minute. One scene is immediately replaced by another, and the constancy of movement makes you forget, as a result of which the duration of the film may seem much shorter.
Also, to develop the “speed” of the film helps action. In the “Abode”, to put it mildly, it is normal. And all this despite the fact that the film is based on the horror series Resident Evil. Action, perhaps, one of the innovations of Anderson, and it looks quite appropriate in the film. - I will say more, if the film was not an action movie from the part, it would turn out something incomprehensible, because in some moments without action just can not do. But, nevertheless, forget that the film is based on the horror game, in any case it is impossible to see what Paul Anderson did. Drive is cool, of course, and action too, one thing is not clear. - Why make a film based on motives, even if you are going to change the genre?!
It is impossible not to pay attention to one more minus in the script, resulting from the drive, we will talk about the characters. The fact is that the scenario as a whole turned out to be more than saturated. And this is not bad, on the contrary, because as a result there will be no room for boredom. But the consequences still have a place, and they affect another, namely the characters. As already mentioned, the action does not have a very good effect on the picture, it suppresses horror. To help the action stands above mentioned drive. Because of the drive, this clumsiness, the characters do not have time to open up, they look like scenery, absolutely flat. Most of all, of course, unlucky those who died in the first half of the film, that is, the majority. Because of the plane, you react to their death perfectly smoothly, which would have finished the horror in the film if not for the end. Only in the second half of the picture, the remaining slowly begin to open up, drama wakes up, and everything that is due, but too late, unfortunately, too late!
Not unknown director Paul Anderson is not the first time to take on the adaptation of the game, and as it turns out later, not the last time. But he was so happy because he was the one who took on “evil.” After the Battle of Death, it’s no surprise. But Anderson is not without surprises, as it turned out, especially in terms of the script. But that doesn’t make him a bad director.
First of all, I just have to highlight the atmosphere! Despite the power of action, the atmosphere in the film remains different, which is what makes the picture so unusual. Desperation and isolation feel very shrill. Paul manages to hold the atmosphere almost to the end. Although it's not horror, not part of the game. - But that's commendable. As for the fights, it is not brilliant, but not bad either. At least you can see what is happening on the screen.
Pretty actress Milla Jovovich does not debut in the role of the filmed heroine, as she did it back in 1997. - But that's another story. In general, as a veteran of this direction, Jovovich did everything at the level. She had to do a lot of things! - But the last thing to do is play. Nevertheless, it was really played as Alice the whole film remembered something, in the beginning did not understand anything, then finally understood, ran away, and in the middle of what she did not wave and whom she only kicked. Not far from her left Michelle Rodriguez, who as always in his role. But she was great. There is nothing more to say, I think most people already know what I am talking about.
Putting everything together, you get not a bad and completely original fantastic thriller. In which there is everything you need, and the catacombs, infested with zombies, and the special squad, armed to the teeth, and Alice, who lost her memory at the most inopportune moment. All this, combined with the drive and action, plus the mesmerizing musical accompaniment of Marco Beltrami and Marilyn Manson, leave an unforgettable impression and a lot of emotions. Not the most successful film adaptation, but also far from mediocre.
