Alexander Atanesyan was born in Tbilisi on October 12, 1953. After school he entered the Tbilisi Pedagogical Institute named after A. Pushkin at the Faculty of Philology, graduated in 1975. In parallel, he studied at the correspondence faculty at the V. Bryusov Yerevan Literary Institute, and then until 1989 - at the Higher Courses of Directors and Screenwriters in the workshop of R. Balayan.

Since 1981, Atanesyan began working as the second director for Alexander Rekhviashvili, Sergey Parajanov and Nodar Mongadze. He mainly worked on short films.
Later he began to act as a producer of feature films, among which was the joint American-Russian project “The Silent Witness”, on which he worked in 1994 with F. Noyce. As a result, he received the award “Best Film Production” from the Steven Spielberg Film Institute and as the best producer – the Nika Award.
From 1994 to 1997, Alexander was the head of the General Directorate of International Film Festivals, then took the post of General Producer of the Kinotavr Festival, and in 2002 he began working as General Director of the Angel Film Company. In 1995, he was awarded the American Press Association Golden Globe Award for his film broadcast.
In 2000, he worked as a director on a criminal militant.
