Mikhail Konstantinovich Kalatozov was born in Georgia in Tiflis on December 28, 1903. His career began in 1917, and six years later he began to work as an editor and assistant cameraman at the Tbilisi Film Studio. In 1925, he became a cameraman and starred in the film The Case of Tariel Mklavadze. In 1927 he worked in the film Gully and in 1929 in the film Gypsy Blood, where he was both a cameraman and a co-writer. His debut as a director with Mikhail took place in 1928 in the film Their Kingdom.

But the appearance of sound was not very good at first affected the work of Kalatozov. His film “The Nail in the Boot” was never seen by the audience. And in the period 1933-1934, Mikhail was a graduate student at the State Academy of Art History. For the next four years, he worked as director of the Tbilisi Film Studio. In 1965, the director was awarded the title of People's Artist of the Georgian SSR, in 1969 he received the title of People's Artist of the USSR. On March 26, 1973, Mikhail Kalatozov died and was buried in Moscow.
