Brian Helgeland was born in 1961 in Providence (Rhode Island, USA). His parents were originally from Norway. He graduated from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Brian Helgeland briefly worked as a fisherman in New Bedford, Massachusetts, then crossed the country and came to Hollywood, where he decided to pursue a career in film. He made his film debut as a screenwriter, taking part in the creation of the script for one of the episodes of the series Friday the 13th. This was followed by the scripts for Rennie Harlin’s horror films A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 (1988) and The Devil’s Phone (1988), as well as the film The Road to Hell (1992). He then collaborated with director Richard Donner on Assassins (1995) and Conspiracy Theory (1997). Widely known to Brian Helgeland brought the adaptation of the “black crime saga” by James Elroy “Secrets of Los Angeles” (1997), carried out by Curtis Hanson. Then came the screen adaptation of David Brin’s fantastic novel “The Postman” (1997), created by Kevin Costner; his script adaptation belongs to Helgeland. In 1999, according to his script, Brian Helgeland directed the film Payback (based on the novel by Donald Westlake “The Hunter”), with Mel Gibson in the title role, considered his debut in directing, although in 1989 he directed one episode for the television series “Tales from the Crypt”. In 2001, the director released the film “The Story of a Knight”, and then again switched to script work.
