Kelly's parents divorced early. The girl was sent for a while to her grandparents, the homeland of Kelly’s mother, but two years later the wayward girl fled back to Honolulu. At the age of 13, Kelly begins working, persuading her mother’s boss to give her a job at least on weekends to help the family.
