In 1985, Chris Marker traveled to Japan to attend the filming of Ran, directed by Akira Kurosawa. In the 1890s, Father Adolf Daens goes to Aalst, a textile town where child labor is rife, pay and working conditions are horrible, the poor have no vote, and the Catholic church backs the petite bourgeoisie in oppressing workers. Australian-born filmmaker George Miller offers a personal view of Australian films. He suggests that they can be regarded as visual music, public dreaming, mythology, and song-lines. In extrapolating the idea of movies as song-lines he examines feature films under the following categories: songs of the land; the bushman; the convicts; the bush-rangers; mates and larrikins; the digger; pommy bashing; the sheilas; gays; the wogs; blackfellas; and urban subversion. He then concludes that these films can be thought of as "Hymns that sing of Australia." close

Directed by French Director Christian Faure and released in 2014, The Law brilliantly traces three days, in late Fall 1974, of stormy debate in the French National Assembly, around a bill which would make "voluntary termination of pregnancy" legal. Behind this bill stands a lone woman brilliantly played by a remarkable Emmanuelle Devos (also in The Other Son): Simone Veil the Minister of Health in the Jacques Chirac government during the presidency of Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. During these three days of violent debate Veil, a Jew and Holocaust survivor, is spared nothing: political negotiations, solitude, sparring arguments, insults and violence to her family. In spite of all of this, Veil never wavers. close

In the men's boudoir, in other words, in the smoking room of a fancy gambling house, four men drank and smoked cigars. They were neither young, nor old, nor beautiful, nor ugly; but they all had one difference, which gave them veterans of love battles, that almost indescribable expression of cold and mocking sadness, which clearly says: “We have lived long enough for our pleasure and are now looking for something that we can love and honor.”
One of them turned the conversation on women. It would be wiser not to talk about them at all; but many intelligent people over a glass of wine are not averse to banal themes. Then the narrator is usually listened to as they would listen to music coming from the ballroom. close

William's government blended elements of the English and Norman systems into a new one that laid the foundations of the later medieval English kingdom. How abrupt and far-reaching the changes were is still a matter of debate among historians, with some such as Richard Southern claiming that the Conquest was the single most radical change in European history between the Fall of Rome and the 20th century. In 1685, Louis XIV banned Protestantism, abolishing the Edict of Nantes. Protestants were forced to change their faith, their churches destroyed, and their pastors expelled. The rebellious were punished with servitude and confiscation of property. Thousands of Huguenot families, refusing to renounce their faith, left France. But there were those who stayed and fought. In southern France, despite the repression, the Protestant Highlander peasants renounced the “papal truth.” In 17 years, the situation has escalated. The king refused to make concessions. Victims to back down. Until the day they were tired of being victims, they destroyed their executioners. The center of the uprising (1702-1705) was the Sevenna mountain range on the right bank of the Rhône, in the province of Languedoc. On July 24, 1702, Esprey Seguier, Abraham Masel, Gideon Laporte and their followers killed the Catholic Archbishop François du Chel de Langlan, killed the inhabitants of the castle, burned 2 churches, destroying their priests. The camizars began to smash the Catholic churches, the houses of the clergy, the merchants and the fiscals, took away the collected taxes and the church tithes. It was not until the spring of 1705 that the government made concessions on taxation. Despite the defeat of the uprising, individual outbreaks of war continued until 1715. The remainder were called kamizars (shirts) from the Languedoc word camiso, meaning "peasant shirt," as they wore white shirts over armor during the fighting at night. . . close

Deep rooted religious beliefs seemingly going back to the Pilgrim Fathers' puritanism dominate a society which is entertained by violence no end on a daily basis. If it is true that American movies reflect American society the United States have yet another severe problem: a lack of open sexuality and eroticism. After the Hays Code had faded away Hollywood exploited the newly found freedom in films like "Basic Instinct" and "Body Heat" to name but a few. But when Reagan and Bush came to power the public attitude to sex changed again. This film is demonstrating how the American film industry correctly reflects these changes in behaviour. Carefully selected film clips ranging from "Basic Instinct" and "Midnight Cowboy" to "The Last Tango" underpin a narration woven together from interviews with those who are in the forefront of sexual liberation. Needless to say that relevant TV series like "Masters of Sex" and "Sex in the City" also feature. close
