An energetic and ambitious Italian woman begins to rebuild the political and economic life of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (Poland and Lithuania), feeling hidden or obvious resistance from Polish and Lithuanian politicians (tycoons, clergy, nobility) and even her husband-king. But Queen Bona has supporters (and even admirers): Marshal Kmit, Chancellor Alifio. The stormy and dramatic romance of “Polish Romeo and Juliet” – August and Barbara – begins, which leads to their secret marriage. Sigismund Augustus demands from the Sejm (parliament) to recognize his marriage to Barbara and seeks her coronation to the Polish throne.
