Abdrashitov’s tape does not allow the viewer to plunge into another world for a couple of hours and watch strangers from the outside. This film is built on the fact that the viewer clearly understands that this ordinary story not only can, but also constantly happens in the real world.
Valery is at the epicenter of the unrest and strikes taking place at his home factory. Cataclysm at work, personal professional difficulties, lack of time and energy lead to his separation from his family, quarrels, scandals and family crisis. Going every day to the “barricades of the strike”, he more and more destroys his family hearth, in addition, with the main character constantly happens some trouble. Valery's friends come to the rescue, his wife's sister arrives from Moscow, but they are unable to turn the tide.
The name of the tape very subtly conveys its main meaning – we are not able to influence most events, just as we are not able to stop a magnetic storm. The outside world bursts into our family nest, throws and tramples our happiness, and we just swim with the flow, unable to cope with the elements.

The tape “Magnetic Storms” conveys all the fragility and uncertainty in which the inhabitants of a provincial city found themselves after the collapse of the Land of Soviets. Their lives have changed, everything has lost meaning and nowhere to find a point of support, frightened and disappointed people cling to something understandable and dear. So Valery sees the meaning of his existence only in the factory and in endless showdowns and fights for his future.
Do you have to cling to your old life? Isn’t family and friends more important than a job that sucks life out of a hero without giving him the chance to develop?
