In 1985, a three-part television biopic “Sophia Kovalevskaya” about the life of the first woman in Russia who became a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences was released on television.
The great Russian mathematician Sophia Kovalevskaya lived a short but bright life. She was only 40 years old (born in 1850, died in 1891), but during this time there were many dramatic events.
Everything was against her professional choice and desire to go on a scientific path. Mathematics is still considered a “male science”, which requires a special mindset that is not characteristic of a woman. But if today the teacher of mathematics in school can be an object of admiration and respect, then a century and a half ago, society imposed an unspoken taboo on the lessons of the weaker sex in mathematical science. And Sophia Kovalevskaya broke this blockade. For a scientific career, she had to solve not only complex mathematical problems, but also life problems. In this list there is even a sham marriage, which gave the opportunity to get a good education abroad.
The pages of the mother’s biography are leafed through by the daughter of Sofia Kovalevskaya, on whose memoirs the plot of the biographical tape is built. The film contains four episodes from the real history of Sofia Vasilyevna, when she was engaged in commerce with her husband, and then broke with him and became the first female academic in tsarist Russia.
Working on a painting
The dramaturgy of the script by Dmitry Vasiliu and Boris Dobrodeev is based on the attempts of Sophia Kovalevskaya’s daughter to figure out who her mother was outside of science and social activities. The female image of the great scientist in the film was recreated by young Elena Safonova. Her partners in the film were excellent actors Aristarkh Livanov (Maxim Kovalevsky), Yuri Solomin (Prince), Ivar Kalnynsh (Victor Jaclar), Elena Solovey (Anna Jaclar), Alexander Filippenko (Fyodor Dostoevsky), Lembit Ulfsak (Leffler), Algimantas Masiulis (Carl Weierstras) and others.
The film was shot at the film studio “Lenfilm” by the Leningrad director Ayan Shakhmaliyeva (in 1956 she received a diploma of the directorial faculty of VGIK, a graduate of the creative studio of Lev Kuleshov).
The music was written by Isaac Schwartz.
In 1985, the biographical tape of Soviet filmmakers “Sophia Kovalevskaya” was awarded the Main Prize at the International Festival of Multi-Series Television Films in Pianchano Therma (Italy). close

This film is based on Truman Capote's hauntingly detailed, psychologically penetrating nonfiction novel. While in prison, Dick Hickock, 20, hears a cell-mate's story about $10,000 in cash kept in a home safe by a prosperous rancher. When he's paroled, Dick persuades ex-con Perry Smith, also 20, to join him in going after the stash. On a November night in 1959, Dick and Perry break into the Holcomb, Kansas, house of Herb Clutter. Enraged at finding no safe, they wake the sleeping family and brutally kill them all. The bodies are found by two friends who come by before Sunday church. The murders shock the small Great Plains town, where doors are routinely left unlocked. The TV 14-episode project “Sevastopol Stories” is not a film adaptation of the eponymous work of Leo Tolstoy. Common is only the place of action - Sevastopol. The cycle covers the 200-year history of the famous city with a dramatic fate. We do not want to affect anyone’s political or national interests. This city has taken a firm place in the national and world history, and it is impossible to erase it from memory. We decided to revive some key pages of Russian history and show how it was.
To get away from the standard textbook narrative, we looked at Sevastopol and the most important moments of its history from an unusual side. The film is made in a new direction for domestic television infotainment - "informing, entertaining" (from the English "information" information and "entertainment" entertainment). It mixes the laws of fiction and documentary film. Our journey into history would have been impossible without the main figure, the Narrator. This is a famous actor of theater and cinema, Honored Artist of Russia Igor Zolotovitsky.
We are shooting in places where historical events really happened. We consult with authoritative scientists, use authentic household items, weapons, costumes. Both professional actors and residents of Sevastopol participate in mass scenes. close
