The first music video aired on MTV on August 1, 1981, was his work for The Buggles, titled "Video Killed The Radio Star". Russell Mulcahy has worked with such musical stars as Elton John, Billy Joel, Ultravox, Duran Duran. His video clips for Queen in 1986 include "A Kind Of Magic" and "Princes Of The Universe." In the early years of the music video era, Malkehy shot one new video clip a week. He made his film debut in 1979 with Derek and Clive Get the Horn. Then, in 1984, he staged the horror film Sekach in Australia, bringing his characteristic manner to the cinema. In 1986, Russell Mulcahy released a science fiction film that made his name widely known, Highlander, starring Christopher Lambert. Then the director directed several episodes for the television series “Tales from the Crypt”, shot the detective “Ricochet” (1991) and the spy film “Blue Ice” (1992). In his adventure film "The Real McCoy" (1993) the main role was played by Kim Basinger, and in the comic strip "Shadow" (1994) the title role was played by Alec Baldwin. After the thriller-drama “Under the Sight” (1996) with Dolf Lundgren, Russell Mulkehy again switched to television, taking part in the project “Hunger”. He then directed the colorful horror film The Mummy: Prince of Egypt (1998), Detective Resurrection, and in 2000 created a television remake of Stanley Kramer's film On the Shore.
