Born in Georgia. From the age of fourteen he worked to feed his family. Soon he began to write humorous stories, which were readily accepted by local newspapers. From 1876 he lived in Atlanta, worked in the newspaper and published stories, fairy tale poems based on Negro folklore, later collected in books about Uncle Remus. The first book about Uncle Remus was the collection “Uncle Remus: His Poems and Proverbs” (1881); it was followed by “Evenings with Uncle Remus” (1883), “Uncle Remus and His Friends” (1892) and “Uncle Remus and the Little Boy” (1905).
