Billy Bob Thornton was born on August 4, 1955 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He decided to become an actor after watching films with Elvis Presley. After years of relative obscurity, in 1996, he was named one of the most talented young filmmakers when he made the low-budget film The Honed Blade, the story of a man who spent twenty-five years in a mental institution after killing his mother and her lover, and was suddenly released. Thornton wrote, directed and starred in the lead role himself - and earned an Oscar for Best Screenplay.
