Alexander Isaakovich Gelman was born on October 25, 1933 in Bessarabia (then Romania). In 1966, Alexander Gelman came to Leningrad, where he became a professional writer. From 1967 to 1971 he worked as a correspondent for the newspapers Construction Worker and Smena. In 1971, Gelman wrote several scripts for documentaries, and in 1971, the feature film “Night Shift” was released on “Lenfilm”, on the script of which he worked with T. Kaletskaya. Together they also wrote the scripts for the films “Consider me an adult” and “Xenia, Fyodor’s beloved wife”. A huge success for the playwright was brought by the film "Prize", as well as the play of the same name created on the basis of the script, which was staged in the leading theaters of the country - in the BDT G. Tovstonogov and in the Moscow Art Theatre O. Efremov. In 1978, Alexander Gelman moved to Moscow, and his new play was staged in the Moscow Art Theatre. Cooperation with this theater continued for many years. Most of the playwright’s works were filmed, performances on them were played on the stages of more than thirty countries.
With the beginning of "perestroika" Gelman left the theater and completely switched to journalism. For several years he led a column in the magazine "Art of Cinema", was a member of the board of founders of the newspaper "Moscow News", a political observer of which is still. Elected in 1989 as a People’s Deputy, he was a member of the Interregional Deputy Group and a member of the Constitutional Conference.
