Vitaly Vyacheslavovich Melnikov was born on May 1, 1928 in the village of Mazanovo, Amur region. In 1952 he graduated from the directorial faculty of VGIK, where he studied in the workshop of Sergei Yutkevich and Mikhail Romm. Then Vitaly Melnikov worked at the Leningrad film studio of popular science films, where he shot several documentaries and popular science films ("For new meadows and pastures", "In the collective farm club", "New reclamation machine", etc.). Since 1964 he works at the film studio "Lenfilm", was the second director on the film Joseph Heifitz "Day of Happiness". Since 1973, he is the artistic director of the Third Television Association of the film studio "Lenfilm", and since 1989 - the artistic director of the film studio "The Voice".
In the feature film, the director made his debut in 1965, shooting the short film Barbos visiting Bobik (together with M. Shamkovich). In 1967, Vitaly Melnikov directed the film “Chief of Chukotka”, which in a comedic way told about the first steps of the young commissar, a man of high aspirations, but without sufficient practical experience. This role was one of the first major works of actor Mikhail Kononov, and his partner was the venerable artist Alexei Gribov. Later, the director successfully manifested himself as a comediographer - "Seven Brides of Corporal Zbruev" (1971), "Unicum" (1983), etc. In the film “Mother got married” (1970) V. Melnikov’s interest in the lyrics of everyday life, in the disclosure of simple human relationships was indicated. The same interest in family relationships is noticeable in the director in the films Hello and Goodbye (1972), Xenia - Fyodor's favorite wife (1974). A significant place in the work of Vitaly Melnikov is occupied by film adaptations: the production of Gogol’s “Marriage” (1978), television versions of A. Vampilov’s plays “The Eldest Son” (1975) and “Vacation in September” (based on the play “Duck Hunt”, 1979). These paintings revealed new facets of the creative individuality of such actors as, for example, Oleg Efremov, Stanislav Lyubshin, Evgeny Leonov. Great audience popularity is still enjoyed by the lyrical comedy "To marry the captain" (1985), with Vera Glagoleva and Viktor Proskurin. In 1987, the screens were released tragicomedy "First meeting, last meeting". Since the early 1990s, the director turned to historical cinema, his first work in this genre was the picture “The Tsar’s Hunt” (1990), then followed by “Tsarevich Alexei” (1997), and in the interval between these films he put a comedy action movie “The Last Case of Varena” (1994). In 2000, the director directed the lyrical drama The Moon Was a Garden. In 2003, the filming of the historical film Vitaly Melnikov “Poor, poor Paul” is completed, in which the main role of Emperor Paul I is played by Viktor Sukhorukov.
