For the first time, Eddie’s life cracked when Nelson was fourteen years old: his parents divorced, which very negatively affected his mental health. Further education of the son fell on the shoulders of the mother, the poverty life humiliated the teenager, and he harbored resentment against his father, who after the dissolution of marriage completely ceased to worry and care about the fate of his son and ex-wife.
Many years later, Nelson will meet his father and forgive him, and this act will not be easy for him. Eddie decided to drop out of school. Later, she and her mother moved to Philadelphia, where her brother Clark Kendrick lived. The uncle did not remain indifferent to the fate of his sister and tried to make her life easier. He first hired Nelson at Mott Iron Works. Very quickly learning, gaining experience, Eddie gets a job as a reporter and writes interesting articles for newspapers.
The singing lessons laid down in childhood by his parents did not pass without a trace for Nelson, he loves to sing, at the same time he learns the technique of singing from the records of such outstanding personalities as Pasquale Amato, Antonio Scotti.
In 1924, Nelson Eddy won the main prize at one of the music competitions, the award of which was the opportunity to perform in the opera hall with a professional orchestra. It was here, on the stage of the opera house, that the talented singer was noticed by the musical director of the Philadelphia Civic Opera Alexander Smullens, who gave him valuable lessons and instructions for the future continuation of his creative career.
