Italian film director, founder of neorealism Giuseppe de Santis (Giuseppe De Santis) was born on February 11, 1917 in the Italian city of Fondi.
In his youth, De Santis was quite an inquisitive and versatile person, interested in philology and philosophy and graduated from the law faculty of the University of Rome. In 1940, he received another education at the acting and directing department of the Rome Experimental Film Center.
The events of 1943-1945 strongly affected the work of De Santis. He fought in the Italian Resistance and was a member of the Communist Party. The films he began working on at this time were clearly anti-fascist. Among these works is the documentary film “Days of Glory”, filmed in 1945. It clearly reflected the current social themes, permeated by hatred of violence and fascism. The films of Giuseppe de Santis were often distinguished by an active civic position and a deep analysis of current events. In particular, this includes the films No Peace Under the Olives (1950) and
Rome, 11 o'clock (1952)
In the 1960s-1970s, DeSantis became interested in commercial cinema, working on the film They Walked East (1964). His last film was The Valuable Specialist with a Secure Future (1972). After 1972, the director left filming, becoming an active public figure and defender of progressive film art. As Jean-Luc Godard notes, “De Santis showed new possibilities in cinema, and himself, like Prometheus, fell silent, giving a fire that lit the road.”
Giuseppe de Santis (died 16.05.1997)
He made more than two dozen films, constantly raising the problems of life and the struggle of workers. All his works have a social background and are distinguished by a special romantic mood, passionate temperament and humanity. /
