To achieve his goal, James enrolled at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, where he met Lee Wennell. During his studies, James absorbed all the knowledge necessary for a directing career. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in art. In 2000, James wrote the script for the horror film Stygian and worked on it as a director. Wang’s debut work was well appreciated by critics and in 2000 earned him the Underground Film Festival Award in the West Guerilla Film nomination. In 2004, James co-wrote with Lee Wennell.
