Julian Schnabel is an American film director and artist. Julian was born in 1951 in an area of New York called Brooklyn. His parents, Esta Greenberg and Jack Schnabel, were Jewish. Julian Schnabel is an American film director and artist.
Julian was born in 1951 in an area of New York called Brooklyn. His parents, Esta Greenberg and Jack Schnabel, were Jewish. They soon moved to Texas, where he spent his childhood. After school, he studied at the University of Houston and was fond of art.
In 1979, Schnabel held his first solo exhibition in New York City at the Mary Boone Gallery. He presented several unique, so-called “plate” paintings, in which fragments of porcelain were mounted.
In the 1980s, Julian Schnabel painted large paintings for which he used different styles and materials. The canvas for his works served as animal skins, linoleum, velvet and much more. Also his paintings were voluminous. They could be, for example, horns. This can be seen in Prehistory: Glory, Honor, Privilege, Hope, written in 1981.
Julian Schnabel became a prominent figure among the neo-expressionists. He also worked as a filmmaker.
He made his debut in 1996 when he directed the drama.
Basquiat . This is a biographical work about the artist, which tells about his formation, glory and self-destruction. This film artist was a friend of Andy Warhol. The prototype of the main character was Schnabel himself. Gary Oldman played him and David Bowie played Warhol.
Schnabel's second film
Until night falls. It came out in 2000. The film is an adaptation of the memoirs of Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas, who fled his homeland after Fidel Castro came to power.
In 2007, the director made two films. The first is a documentary called Berlin. The second one is called "Spacesuit and Butterfly". It tells the story of ELLE magazine editor Jean-Dominique Bobby, who was bedridden at 43. Julian received an award for this work at the Cannes Festival in the nomination “Best Director”.
