Steven was born on March 5, 1937 in Brooklyn, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and then Harvard. He began his career as a lawyer at the Federal Trade Commission consumer protection agency, and then began working as a lawyer at Columbia Pictures and Paramount Studios.
Wanting to make a career as a producer, he acquired the rights to Larry McMurtry’s novel The Last Movie Show. The film produced by him was eventually nominated for eight Oscars, including Stephen himself was presented for this award in the nomination “Best Film”.
In the future, Friedman shot about twenty more films, none of which, unfortunately, was not as successful as his debut tape. Among these works are the films “Little Adorable Girls”, “Big High”, “These Are Such Neighbors” and a number of others.
He died on October 4, 1996 at the age of 59.
