Dave Brubeck, born David Warren Brubeck, pianist and jazz composer, was born on December 6, 1920.
Paying tribute to his musical roots (his mother was a pianist), Dave has been fond of classical music composers since early childhood.
Sergei Prokofiev Dmitry Shostakovich, and already from the age of four plays the piano, and from nine - masters the cello.
In 1941, he entered music college, but the war interrupted music classes. It was only in 1946 that Dave and his friend Bill Smith began studying the composition with Arnold Schoenberg. It was from this time that Dave’s future musical style – “free jazz” – was formed. In 1949, the musician began to perform in a jazz trio, which soon joined Paul Desmond, the best saxophonist in the world. The quartet includes Dave Brubeck himself, Paul Desmond, Joe Morello and Gene Wright.
Thanks to hard work and musical training, by the mid-50s of the twentieth century, the quartet became a kind of “fashion trendsetter” in the world of jazz. In 1952, the album Brubeck Time was released. The fame of jazzman Dave Brubeck spreads far beyond America through recordings and touring. In 1959, Dave performed a piece written by his older brother Howard Brubeck called Dialogues for Jazz Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra. In 1961, Dave composed the ballet Jazz Pointe. Until the end of the 60s, the quartet is the best jazz band, having toured America and Europe, releasing more than a dozen collections, presenting listeners with such compositions as “Blue Rondo in the Turkish style” or “Unsquare Dance” and others.
In 1971, Dave created a new jazz band called Two Generations of Brubecks, which includes Dave Brubeck and his sons Darius, Chris and Danny. Again, the press, in particular Time magazine, calls the quartet "the most popular in the country." In 1973, the album All the Things We Are appeared. For more than 10 years, Two Generations of Brubecks has delighted fans with magnificent jazz compositions, both on tour and in the recording of albums.
Since 1982, Brubeck assembles a new jazz ensemble, and again conquers with his skill. In 1987, he visited Russia with touring performances, and soon the album Dave Brubeck in Moscow was released.
Despite the rather impressive musical and everyday experience, Dave Brubeck still remains a romantic, conveying all the fullness and colorfulness of jazz music with his works. /
