He was born in Ukkel, Brussels Capital Region, on May 30, 1946. He studied at the Higher National Institute of Visual Arts, graduating in 1968. The first years he worked in the theater as a lighter, then, in 1970, he tried himself as an operator in a short film, and the first two feature films he shot came out in 1973, one of which, presented to the main Cannes award for the film Beauty, he collaborated with director Andre Devolvo. In the future, they created several more films together, and in total Charles shot more than forty films in both Belgian and French cinema. For his camera work in Melodrama in 1987, he was nominated for the Cesar Award.
