Margaret Thatcher is the first woman in the history of Great Britain to become Prime Minister. She headed the British government in 1979 and led it for eleven and a half years. After retiring, Lady Thatcher wrote a two-volume memoir (The Downing Street Years and The Path to Power). She has visited America, Europe and Asia many times, giving lectures on the problems of international relations, maintaining contacts with leaders of many countries. Lady Thatcher continues to play a prominent role in British politics.
