He graduated from the University of Southern California in 1950 with a Master of Dramatic Arts degree. Peckinpah began his career as a screenwriter and director in theater and television, and made his film debut with the Western Deadly Companions (1961). Before that, he gained experience working as an assistant director for Don Siegel. During his career, Sam Peckinpa managed to become famous as one of the most “heavy” and scandalous Hollywood directors. Being severe in the behind-the-scenes battles with producers and studio heads, Peckinpah enjoyed the love of actors and film groups on the set. Among his associates were actors David Warner, James Coburn, Chris Kristofferson, Ben Johnson, cameramen Lucien Ballard and John Coquillon, composer Jerry Fielding. The famous Pekingpah made films as tough and controversial as the character of their creator - Straw Dogs (1971), Wild Gang (1969), Iron Cross (1977), Chase and others. Sam Peckinpa died of a heart attack on December 28, 1984 in Inglewood, California.
