A large train station, it might be anywhere in a big city. Waiting passengers, some are curiously observing each other, some are too much involved with their own petty problems to pay attention to anything else. Our man, self- assured, practically undresses some of the woman present with his eyes, at least as long as his wife is absent, trying to get them some coffee. A beauty in blue returns his challenging looks, he can hardly believe it's true. Obviously, it is his lucky day today. By the time his wife returns our man has experienced some astonishing things under the watchful eyes of the fellow passengers. And most probably he will be much more reserved next time he sees a beautiful blonde. close

A child is born. We see underwater swimmers representing this. He is young, in a jungle setting, with two fanciful "instincts" guiding him as swooping bird-like acrobats initially menace, then delight. As an adolescent, he enters a desert, where a man spins a large cube of metal tubing. He leaves his instinct-guides behind, and enters a garden where two statues dance in a pond. As he watches their sensual acrobatics of love, he becomes a man. He is offered wealth (represented by a golden hat) by a devil figure. In a richly decorated room, a scruffy troupe of a dozen acrobats and a little girl reawaken the old man's youthful nature and love. close

Modest meditation on youth, life and mortality made up almost entirely from professionally made family films. What is more heart-rending than seeing pictures of people who have died? The aim of Mort à Vignole is to transcend the pain of a certain family and to come to terms with sensitive memories and family bonds. - IFFR close

An attractive young woman drives through the countryside, thinking about a man, stopping to change from a tee-shirt to a sheer dress. She enters a prison as a visitor, is subject to a careful search, and is placed in a plain room with cheap metal furniture. A guard brings into the room the man she's been thinking about, removes his handcuffs, sits him down in a chair across from her, and hands him a towel and bar of soap. The guard leaves. She asks the prisoner what happened, and he begins an explanation. Where does this lead? close

Herr Hoffman parks his late-model car in a lot across from his corner office on the top floor. Each day, he puts a coin in the cup of a beggar who stands in front of the building. One day, Hoffman looks out his window and notices the beggar washing his car - no one else's in the lot, just Hoffmann's. That evening, when he gives the beggar a coin, Hoffmann tells him not the wash it. But the next day, it happens again. On the third morning, Hoffman drives his car back and forth in a mud puddle; the beggar washes it carefully. That evening, Hoffman has no change and no small bills, only 100 DM. He tries to evade the beggar, who gives chase, cane and all. More than wills collide. close

This series of three works is part of the “household scenes” project, a corpus in development. It is a set of vignettes, cinematographic tableaux, built around the repeated gestures of my parents' daily life. I present these scenes sometimes as sequence shots, sometimes as a succession of cut-out shots. Some depict only one parent, with particular emphasis on how he/she negotiates domestic space. With these paintings, imagined in various environments and by a treatment specific to the medium, I work to reveal the singularity of the places, the movement of the figures and the relationship between the two. close
