Lenfilm's most recent major production spins a kind of historical fantasy based on real incidents that's full of ominous implications for today. One night, a patrol rushes into the chambers of the Russian prince Pavel, son of the Empress Catherine; the Empress has died, and Pavel is to be anointed the new Tsar. Thought to be feeble-minded at best and crazy at worst, Pavel soon lives up to his enemies' fears: he dismisses long-serving courtiers, demands that peasants only work three days a week, and declares that state officials should start their days at 5 am. Soon, it seems that everyone who can is trying to hatch some kind of plot against him - including his own sons. Sumptuously designed, POOR POOR PAVEL constrasts the imperial splendor of the court with the sordid atmosphere of conspiracies and backstabbing that comes to define these characters' lives. close

The melodrama “Magnetic Storms”, filmed in 2003 by director Vadim Abdrashitov from a script by Alexander Mindadze, depicts the difficult fate of a man more
The melodrama “Magnetic Storms”, filmed in 2003 by director Vadim Abdrashitov from a script by Alexander Mindadze, depicts the difficult fate of a man torn between family and constant worries, and as a result balancing on the edge of emptiness.
Ordinary life
In the film “Magnetic Storms” the viewer will not see special effects, chase, shooting and fantastic adventures. It’s also not a movie in which the characters are ordinary people, but they are constantly either beautiful and joyful or unspeakably sad events. Abdrashitov’s tape does not allow the viewer to plunge into another world for a couple of hours and watch strangers from the outside. This film is built on the fact that the viewer clearly understands that this ordinary story not only can, but also constantly happens in the real world.
Valery is at the epicenter of the unrest and strikes taking place at his home factory. Cataclysm at work, personal professional difficulties, lack of time and energy lead to his separation from his family, quarrels, scandals and family crisis. Going every day to the “barricades of the strike”, he more and more destroys his family hearth, in addition, with the main character constantly happens some trouble. Valery's friends come to the rescue, his wife's sister arrives from Moscow, but they are unable to turn the tide.
The name of the tape very subtly conveys its main meaning – we are not able to influence most events, just as we are not able to stop a magnetic storm. The outside world bursts into our family nest, throws and tramples our happiness, and we just swim with the flow, unable to cope with the elements.
The complexity of change
The tape “Magnetic Storms” conveys all the fragility and uncertainty in which the inhabitants of a provincial city found themselves after the collapse of the Land of Soviets. Their lives have changed, everything has lost meaning and nowhere to find a point of support, frightened and disappointed people cling to something understandable and dear. So Valery sees the meaning of his existence only in the factory and in endless showdowns and fights for his future.
Do you have to cling to your old life? Isn’t family and friends more important than a job that sucks life out of a hero without giving him the chance to develop? Isn’t it time for heroes who live in a dream to return to reality? After watching the film, these and many other questions remain in the air, making the viewer think. close

The plot is not developed; in the film we see a man (he) and a woman (she) who, in fact, are neither connected nor familiar with each other; they casually met in hospital. "She" (Viktoria Tolstoganova) does not see that she is in danger in connection with her plan to use a tape with illegally made recordings as compromising evidence in court.
