Writer Eric Chambon (Aznavour) is a well-educated, intelligent, single and very attached to his past. It was the memories of childhood deprivations that formed the basis of his only book “The Summers of War”, which – unexpectedly for many – was awarded the prestigious Balzac Prize for Literature by an authoritative jury. However, the elderly debutant is completely indifferent to fame and success. He is much more concerned about the disintegration of old ties, the loss of which he experiences deeply and painfully. Therefore, when the man who replaced Erica’s father in the difficult war years dies, the sad hero of Aznavour is ready to throw away old grievances and resume relations with his half-brother Maurice (Ossein). It won't be easy. After all, the ascetic hero of Ossein is a recognized authority of the criminal world man is a mystery man danger. His life is shrouded in mystery and devoid of even a hint of the presence of simple human feelings in it. What could unite two brothers so different, a writer and a criminal? Only the real risky common "case" is a perfectly planned and audaciously executed bank robbery. . . close

A good cast smooths over the rough spots of Les Heros sont Fatigues. The scene is the African republic of Liberia, which in this film proves to be a stopping-off point for a number of shady characters. Yves Montand plays a French ex-pilot who becomes involved in a scheme to smuggle stolen diamonds. His cohorts include a Nazi collaborator, a German refugee, and the white mistress of a prominent Liberian. A romance develops between the ex-pilot and the aforementioned mistress. Meanwhile, one of the conspirators (Curt Jurgens) has a last-minute attack of conscience, effectively queering the deal. The steamier romantic passages in Les Heros sont Fatigues had to be trimmed for American consumption. close

The title of this French "reality" drama, which translates to Before the Deluge, is a play on Louis XVI's famous prognostication, "Apres moi, le deluge." Set in 1950, the film concentrates on five Parisian adolescents. Certain that the next war will herald the apocalypse, the youngster make plans to run off to a desert island and set up a new society. This, however, will require money, which is why the boys decide to pull off a "necessary" robbery. Idealism collapses in the face of cold reality, as the five youths suffer from the consequences of their actions. Avant le Deluge was one of a group of films cowritten by director Andre Cayatte and Charles Spaak which endeavored to explore the touchy social issues of the day: others in the Cayatte-Spaak canon include the euthanasia-themed Justice est Faite and the capital-punishment tract Nous sommes tous des assassins. close
