Hans Christian Andersen is known all over the world as the author of children's fairy tales such as "Thumbelina", "The Little Mermaid" (Den lille Havfrue), "The Snow Queen" (Sneedronningen), "Fyrtoiet" and many others. The Danish storyteller was born in 1805 in the city of Odense (Denmark). His father, Hans Andersen, worked as a shoemaker, and his mother, Anna Marie Andersdatter, as a laundress. Since childhood, thanks to his father, Hans Christian Andersen loved fairy tales. He often dreamed, composed various stories and staged home performances.
After the death of his father (1816) at the age of 11, Hans Christian Andersen was forced to get a job first as an apprentice and later as a cigarette factory worker. When he was fourteen years old, he left for Copenhagen, where after a year of unsuccessful attempts, he still entered the Royal Theatre, in which he played secondary roles.
"The Nightingale" (Nattergalen), "The King's New Dress" (Keiserens nye Klæder), "Shadow" (Skyggen), "Girl with Matches" (Den lille Pige med Svovlstikkerne), "Wild Swans" (De vilde Svaner), "Ole Lukoye" (Olekoye) Andersen wrote more than four hundred fairy tales that appealed to children and their parents in many parts of the world.
The works of Hans Christian Andersen formed the basis of many films and cartoons. /
