Rob Marshall was born on October 17, 1960 in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. He grew up in Pittsburgh and began his professional career at the age of 12, performing in the local musical theater. Touring Broadway and working on stage did not prevent him from earning a degree at Carnegie Mallon University, where he studied the art of musical theater. After moving to New York in the early 1980s, Rob Marshall sang and danced in several Broadway shows, while becoming an assistant choreographer. But after the injury he received on stage, he decided to focus entirely on his behind-the-scenes career. In 1993, Marshall made his debut as a choreographer in the production of the musical "Kiss of Spider Woman", and later as a director - "Second I", "Company", "Victor / Victoria". He worked extensively on Broadway, restarting the Los Angeles musical Chicago; in 1997, he was invited as a choreographer to film the television version of the musical Sinderella, and then as a director and choreographer of the musical Annie (1999), which became a very popular television production. In 1998, the activity of Rob Marshall on Broadway was marked by the release, together with Sam Mendes, of the renewed musical Cabaret, which had a great success. Having been invited by Miramax to stage The Apartments, Marshall managed to convince the studio management to instruct him instead to bring Chicago vaudeville to the screen. The result was very successful - the film "Chicago", released in 2000 and became the debut in the "big movie" director Rob Marshall, became one of the successful projects of the year. The main roles in it were played by Richard Gere, Renee Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones, and the first two were awarded Golden Globe Awards. The director also received nominations for "Oscar" and "Golden Globe" and the prize for the best director-debutant from the National Council of Critics.
