In 1922 Erast Pavlovich began to work in the theater of V. Meyerhold, with whose figures he met in Moscow. Garin played his first, small roles in the performances of A. Sukhovo-Kobylin “The Death of Tarelkin” and “The Earth on End” by S. Tretyakov in 1924.
Garin was in demand in the theater, his original bright nature, kindness, skillful humor brought him special popularity. Thanks to his spiritual qualities, he found special love with Meyerhold, becoming one of the best actors in his theater. Vsevolod Meyerhold highly appreciated Garin's acting talent and his deep analytical mind, always listened to his opinion.
In 1924, Garin received the first major work in the play “Trust” based on the novel by I. Ehrenburg, in which he was involved simultaneously in seven roles, showing the viewer the brilliant art of transformation, the dexterity of the juggler, the characteristic, parody of images. It was in this performance that the future features of the Garin style were minted: a unique, peculiar manner of moving, speaking, gestures. Garin paid a lot of attention to dialogue, words, honing and repeating them, trying on a diverse game of his heroes.
Great fame and popular recognition brought Garin the role of Gulyachkin in the play “The Mandate”. The actor had a bright, unique comic appearance, which gave him the right to perfectly play the roles of carefree eccentrics and other comic characters in which he was irresistible and truly understandable to the viewer.
In 1936 Erast Garin decided to try himself in independent theatrical work, left the V. Meyerhold Theater and moved to the Leningrad Comedy Theater, where he worked as an actor and then as a director until 1950.
In 1941, for the role of Tarakanov in
film "Musical History" E. Garin was awarded the Stalin Prize of the second degree.
In 1977, for great merits, he was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR. /
