Hunter Stockton Thompson was born on July 18, 1937 in Kentucky, Louisville. Hunter attended High School for Boys. When he was 14, his father died. After his death, Hunter's mother gradually became a drunken alcoholic.
In 1956, Hunter joined the U.S. Army. He had to literally escape there after Hunter crashed his employer's car. In the Army, Thompson worked for the Florida Department of Information Services at Eglin Air Force Base. In 1956 he started his own newspaper. His articles, which were published in local newspapers, did not like the leadership of the base because of open criticism of the US army in general and the base itself in particular.
In 1958, Thompson was discharged from the U.S. Army with the rank of Private Aviation First Class. Hunter went to New York, where he began his studies at Columbia University. Together with his studies, Hunter worked in the magazine “Time” as a courier. In 1959, he was fired for his rebellious nature. Another job (a reporter for the Middletown Daily Record) also resulted in Hunter being fired for the fight. In 1960, Thompson moved to San Juan (Puerto Rico) and got a job in a sports magazine. In San Juan, Thompson meets journalist William Kennedy, who later became his good friend.
During this time, Hunter wrote two novels, The Rum Diary and The Prince of Medusa. After the publication of his works, Thompson became famous. His most famous books are, “Hey, sucker!” I Love You, Better Than Sex, The Price of Rum, The Great Shark Hunt, The Kingdom of Fear, Songs of the Doomed One, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Generation of Pigs, etc. Thompson is the author of a huge number of articles about American reality. His critical essays have been published in various leading US publications.
On May 9, 1963, he married Sandra Conklin. In 1964, their son Juan was born. After 20 years, they broke up and remained good friends. At the age of 67, Hunter Thompson committed suicide. On February 20, 2005, he shot himself in the head while at his home in Woody Creek.
