In 1928, while being a tourist in Paris, Utesov heard the Ted Lewis jazz orchestra that struck Leonid. Returning home, he creates his own "Thea Jazz", the first performance of which takes place in 1929 at the Small Opera House in Leningrad. The success of the orchestra was amazing, and Utesov practically changed his profession, becoming its leader. Utesov’s friendship with I. Dunayevsky had a huge impact on the work of the entire orchestra.
