John Banville was born on December 8, 1945 in Wexford, Ireland. He received his education in his hometown, at the Christian Brothers’ School and at St. Peter’s College. In 1970, Banville published his debut book, a collection of short stories Long Lankin, which was followed by the novels Night Birch (1971) and Birch Grove (1973). The artistic portrait of the Polish astronomer Dr. Copernicus (1976) brought the author the Jack Tate Black Prize and became the first in a series about famous ideas and outstanding scientists. Among them are the novels Kepler (1981), Newton’s Letter – Interlude (1982), and Mephisto (1989). The trilogy, written on behalf of the convicted murderer, consisted of the novels “Evidence” (1989), “Ghosts” (1993) and “Athena” (1995). The prototype of the main character of the novel “Untouchable” (1997) was an art historian and Soviet spy, Sir Anthony Blunt. Then the light saw the novels “Eclipse” (2000), “Shadow” (2002) and the book “Prague”. Magical sketches, in which the author shares his vision of a magical European city. In 2005, John Banville won the Booker Prize for his novel The Sea (2005).
