Director Liliana Cavani was born in 1936. She graduated from the University of Bologna, then studied at the Experimental Film Center in Rome.
Since the beginning of the 60-ies worked on a series of historical and documentary television films "History of the Third Reich", "Peten: the process in Vichy". In 1966, she directed the feature film Francis of Assisi, which was released only in 1972, and then the historical film Galileo.
The film The Night Porter (1974) brought the director world fame. The love story of a Nazi officer and his concentration camp victim is still her most famous work.
In each film, the most attention is paid to the psychology of heroes who do not embody social and artistic types, are not carriers of a generally recognized idea. The extreme naturalism of the paintings, combined with their psychological authenticity, gave rise to a new type of film about fascism that the ideologists of socialist countries could not accept. The most complete expression of Cavani’s poetics can be seen in the film “Skin” (1980), based on Malaparte’s work about the arrival of American troops in Italy at the end of World War II.
In 1989, Cavani again turned to the person of Francis of Assisi, making the film Francesco, in which Mickey Rourke played the main role.
