John Williams was born on February 8, 1932 in New York, New York. In 1948, his family moved to Los Angeles. In New York, he performed in clubs and recorded as a jazz pianist. Williams then moved to Los Angeles, where he began his film career. Since 1956, he has participated in the recording of music for films in various orchestras; he worked with Bernard Hermann, Alfred Newman, Franz Waxman. Williams soon became interested in composition, and during the 1960s he wrote music for many television programs, winning two Emmy Awards for his work. In January 1980, he became the nineteenth conductor of the Boston Orchestra.
