Mahmud Alisultanovich Esambayev was born on July 15, 1924 in the Chechen village of Starye Atagi (Urus-Martan district of the Chechen-Ingush ASSR). According to his own words, he started dancing at the age of three. After graduating from six classes, Esambayev, against the will of his father, who condemned such a frivolous approach to the future path, decided to seriously engage in dance. In 1939-1941 he studied at the Grozny Choreographic School. After the deportation of the family from their native places in the mid-1940s, Esambayev found himself in Kyrgyzstan, where his career began. In Frunze, he was accepted into the troupe of the Kyrgyz Opera and Ballet Theatre, of which he was a soloist in 1944-1956. The expression of his gesture and eagle appearance were useful for the roles of the Evil Genius, Giray, Taras in Taras Bulba and the fairy Karabos - the negative heroine of Sleeping Beauty. Since 1957, Mahmud Esambayev performed on the stage, later creating a unique monotheater of dance miniatures. Among his most striking compositions, where the artist sometimes checked the movements by stopwatch, are the dances of the peoples of the world: the Chechen and Uzbek “Chaban”, the Bashkir “Warrior”, the Mongolian “Hunter and Eagle”, the Colombian “Bamboo”, the Brazilian “Makumba”, the pop version of the Indian dance Bharat-natya “Golden God”, the ritual “Dance of Fire” to the music of Manuel de Falla... These and many other dances performed by the outstanding master conquered the world stage. He was repeatedly invited to act in films, and one of his memorable roles was the Shaman in the adventure film “Sannikov Land” (1973). In 1974, Mahmud Esambayev - already a People's Artist of eight republics - became the People's Artist of the USSR. He was elected a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR, was president of the International Union of Pop Artists, academician of the International Academy of Dance, vice-president of the International Union of Theatre Workers and the International Ballet Association, was a member of the Central Council of the VOPD "Spiritual Heritage". Until the last days of his life, Esambayev was engaged in public activities, tried to help people. In 1984, he was awarded the title of Hero of Socialist Labor, but he did not wear the Gold Star until after the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the 1990s, in the fire of war in Esambayev’s homeland, in Chechnya, his art collection and diamond collection disappeared – both of which he collected all his life. The great dancer and remarkable man died on January 7, 2000 in Moscow after a serious illness. .
