Actor and director L. Q. Jones was born in Beaumont, Texas, and was born with the name Justice Ellis McQueen. He graduated from the University of Texas with majors in law, business and journalism. His roommate was Fess Parker, who was successful on television in the series Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett. It was Packer who sent Johns the book Battle Cry (he was going to play in the film based on this book). Jones, who by this time had changed several works and now owned a ranch in Nicaragua, read the book and decided that he really liked a character called L. Q. Jones - so much so that he flew to Hollywood and got the role, and later signed a personal contract with director Raoul Walsh. Since then, he has signed only with that name.

The contract was resold to the Warner brothers’ studio, Jones played in the TV series Cheyenne, then left the show, played in several war films and westerns. In the 60s, the contract ended, and Jones decided that it was time to move from comedy cowboys to villains. He played villains in nine television productions and Sam Peckinpah's film Wild Bunch.

He had no problems with his work, Jones was in high demand, today he has more than 70 movies, 25 TV films, more than 400 series on credit. Somewhere in his spare time he manages to write scripts, direct and produce films. Not embarrassed by acting awards, Jones won the 1974 Hugo Award for his screenplay of Harlan Allison’s novel A Boy and His Dog.
